Tiny Stonehenge Moment
I can't find the link to the MP3 upload to the site. Am I being, how you say, retarded?

Anyway, until somebody puts me straight, this is a .wav file :)

This is my cover version of the Only Ones song "Another Girl, Another planet".

Live drums played by my 12-year-old son, everything else by a passing superannuated muso. :o

I know the bass drum is too loud in places. :D

Edited to add MP3 version: http://FastFreeFileHosting.com/file/54098/Copy-of-BRWC-0708-06-mp3.html

As a bit of background, this was recorded in my (untreated) spare bedroom using budget Red5 Audio kick and snare mics, plus two AKG D321 dynamic vocal mics as overheads. Some guitar was recorded DI using the BR-800's COSM effects, the lead guitar was recorded through a mic'd Marshall valve stack. Vocals recorded with the previously mentioned AKG. No additional outboard gear was used in the mixing or mastering process.

Well, the performance really loses it in a few spots, but OK, Two things stand out that could be improved, better overheads would really improve the drums (I didnt really mind the kick). The bass needs alot of work, in fact is there a bass track ? Needs a better growling tone with more sub frequencies, other than that, OK considering your just getting going. Welcome to HR.

Thanks for your comments, PDP - you're so right about the performance, but it's difficult to get a young kid to appreciate the need to do a take over and over again. :D As far as the bass track goes, I agree, although the fashion in the days and musical genre from which the original version of that track originates - (British Punk music of 1978) was for the bass to be fairly well buried in the mix. Having said that, I'm a massive fan of JJ Burnel of the Stranglers, which dates from the same era and genre, so real "in your face" growl is my favourite bass tone- not sure that would have suited the track, though! A pair of condensers is next on the list of items to purchase.

Once again, thanks for your constructive crit. :)

Cool, I hadnt considered that.

He did pretty well for 12 years old, and yeah you gotta get a take while the attention span is still there. Lol!

Have fun!

Thanks again. I think he's a little genius. Real drums played live are a bit difficult to appreciate when we're so used to quantized drum parts, sampled drums etc. these days. I sometimes wonder how the track "Keep on Runnin'" from the 60's would fare under the spotlight of modern criticism. That's a truly horrible sounding mix, but always sounds awesome through a disco set up at 2 a.m. when you're hammered. ;D

Try and find an MP3 Converter and drop this down to 320MPS. This would help get some more plays/reviews. I was expecting some heavy punk rock but this is sort of pop - thanks in part to the vocals. It feels like it is from the 60's rock but with much better recording. Impressive drumming for 12 yo. The rest is also very very good. You could easily make a whole album of this kinda stuff and I'd buy it. I didn't find anything off in the mix - it just took me through the song steadily so no issues for me mix-wise....

Apologies for the outrageous bump, but are there any more comments before I allow it to drop off the bottom of the page? :)

This was a fun listen. Given the constraints you describe about the process, I'd say you did very well. I have an 8 year old boy, and if he can play drums like that when he is 12 I will be recruiting him for sure.

I thought the kick was fine.

I liked the background vocals in particular. Never heard (or heard of) the original, but this was a fun and energetic performance. The cymbals struck me as a bit too washy maybe, but not too bad. The bass guitar was notably absent although I sensed its presence without clearly making it out. Good job overall.

Thanks, heatmiser - seems like I dropped the ball on the bass guitar, got too wound up in the other instruments! My version is very close in arrangement to the original but very different listened to side-by-side. A little-known US beat combo by the name Blink182 covered it. Sorry, RUINED it, lol :D
