One step further! :) I've opened up the deck and I found out there are some things inside my deck that aren't original. First there's some home-etched board with a light and a sensor pointed at a taped cross on the back of the take-up reel-motor. From the board there are going 4 wires to the remote connector. Maybo some kind of locator? Furthermore, there's a 4-way relay that switches 3 pair of wires on the main pcb. I shortwired the relay, so the wires aren't interrupted anymore and tried to record. The record light and channel lights now stay on steady! That's good news. The only problem is the deck isn't yet recording. I see the vu-meters moving when it's on the input monitor, but when I switch to the heads I still hear the original recording, so it doesn't erase and record. I will continue my search tomorrow. If anybody has suggestions please let me know. Thanks!

Good to hear that you've made some progress! :)

As stated earlier though, with a modded machine, it's tough to make valid suggestions beyond going over every last spot on the machine that looks modded and returning it to it's factory state and having the full service manual at hand to ensure that's being done correctly.

Best of luck, the rest of the way!

Cheers! :)

Update

Ok time for a little update. I removed the modification and restored the original wiring. Everything seems to work on the function select system and the deck is actually erasing the tape when it's in record mode.:) Still one (big) problem left: No recording. When I'm in input and recording mode, I can hear the input signal and see the vu-meters moving, but the signal isn't recorded on tape. The only result on playback is an erased tape. I've read somewhere that it could be a faulty relay on the channel boards, but is it likely to happen on all channels?

Good stuff, Jovas! :)

How about the dbx jumpers on the back of the unit's panel?

Does anyone know if jumper bridging pins need to be in place for sound to pass through the deck?

I wish I had a manual so I could offer more definitive suggestions. :o

Cheers! :)

Yes those jumpers need to be there.

Aha!

So you're confirming that there is a jumper panel row of jacks for the dx-8 to plug into?

I was looking on google for a picture of the back of that deck and damned if I could find even one picture of it! :o

I have a picture of the back of the dx-8 itself and that thing has 4 jacks for each channel plus a round multi pin connector for the control signals.

Do you have a picture of the back of an 80-8 that you could post so that Jovas knows which connectors and jumpers we're talking about?

I'd almost bet that, that's the problem right now with his deck.

Cheers! :)

No jumpers I can see on the back of the 80-8...just the 8 input and 8 output jacks, the interface jack for the DX-8 control cable, and the remote connector...no mention of jumpers in the manual either in the section regarding the DX-8...

Dang! :(

I was hoping it could have been something simple. :o

At this point, I'm out of any useful ideas so please feel free to chime in if you have any ideas on this mysterious problem.

Cheers! :)

Yoohoo! It's working. I checked the board again and saw that I forgot to resolder a connection that was interrupted. It's recording now  Channel 7 seems the only one with no playback (on the meter) but I'll check that later. I'm gonna have some beers now :D I'll post some pictures from the inside of the deck later (if anybody's interested). Cheers!

Good stuff, Jovas! :)

Very glad to hear you got it going in spite of the poor advice I gave you. :o

Cheers! :)
