Hi!

I've been lurking on and off for about a year and finally have a few tracks that are nearly there. I've been messing about with a buddy in my little home studio for nearly a year. This is one of the tracks we recently "completed".

I'd be grateful to hear your opinions on the mix, song, whatever.

We're also looking for a lyricist and/or vocalist if anyone is interested in telemusicmaking (a Logic-based studio).

Working title: Sooz

Thanks in advance... go easy on the newbie. :)

It took you guys a year to finish that up?

Sounds good, but nothing mind blowing.

I was trying to say that I've been working with the same person for about a year. We both work, have kids, etc and only get about 3 or 4 hours in the studio per week, if we're lucky.

We've put 5 tracks together in that time, but I didn't think it would be polite to dump them all on the forum at once.

Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment. I'm going to work on blowing your mind with the next one. :)

I'm sure once you have some vocals and some kind of mastering to make it shine though it'll be great.

Sounds pretty good. I'm sure it will be better with vocals. There is a noise in the right channel that is very irritating. A fuzzy guitar maybe. Definitely need a better tone for it.

peace,

This reminds of old King Crimson, i.e. Court of the Crimson King era. Not a bad mix. Mastering would be helpful.

Thanks for the comments so far, much appreciated! It definitely needs to be mastered, but I want to make sure the mix is where it should be -- and perhaps get some vox in there before I worry about mastering.

Chili: I'll definitely work on that guitar tone.

Yeah that distorted guitar on the right is bad. The snare is really thin too. Not enough body in that snare sound. The acoustic sounds like it was recorded direct maybe? Don't do that. It's never good. Mic it. The rest is pretty good.

Mastering would be helpful.

Mastering is not suppose to help fix a mix. This mix is close enough that a little bit more tweaking will pull it in tight. Mastering is the process of getting a collection of songs ready for mass duplication. Any adjustments made at that point would be to get all the songs to gel together as an album.

That's what I mean. :D

I think people pretty much covered it.

Acoustic guitar sounds like it was recorded direct. It has that "almost but not quite full" sound.

The snare was pretty slappy.

Didn't care for the distorted guitar sound.

There seem to be some very faint background vocals in spots. Like they're singers from a parallel universe that are trying to chime in. If that's supposed to be there you need to turn them up.

There are some plucked violins over on the left. They seem to be missing some highs. They sound a bit on the dull side and there's not enough definition to them. It's a shame because its a good part and it'd be good to hear them better.

nice tune.....I read the comments first before listening to it and Im surprised they're listening to the same tune??

needs a bit of sparkle on the acoustic and piano...more work with reverb and EQing...micing an acoustic is a good idea but not always possible, I think when its that out in front you're not going to get away with DI as easily, though the playing was nice...Triples right about the staccato strings, bring them up a wee bit and maybe a little ping pong delay on them

vocals would make this shine but I think its really good inspite of this :)

Thanks a ton for the feedback, I really appreciate you all taking the time to listen and comment. As I said before, I've been lurking for a while and was a bit nervous to hear what Greg_L had to say (if anything), and I'm taking those suggestions as a compliment. :)

You are correct, the guitar was recorded DI. We mic'd it up as well, and it sounded really great, except for the bit when our kids got into a tussle in the next room... doh! Based on several of the same comment, I think we'll have to re-track the acoustic so we can get a clean mic'd take. Damn kids! ;)

I'll work on the piano EQ and try to bring up the staccato violins as well. And clearly the distorted guitar sound doesn't work at all, so I may just drop that out if I can't get it to sit right.

@TripleM: You are right, there are some very low vocals in one spot, and they are supposed to be almost inaudible. I know that isn't generally a good choice, but this was an "artistic decision" ... sort of a subliminal thing. Bonus points to whoever figures out what they are saying! :)

Thanks again everyone... you are VERY helpful!!

they say "buy your mattresses at furniture warehouse, 33% cheaper than high street brands"?
