First Post Cover Tune

I can't listen now cause I'm at work, but I hope your stuff is good. Some of the guys around here don't really care for the 1 post people showing up posting songs looking for help. Especially if you didn't even write the song. But maybe nobody will care.......

Admittedly I'm new to this board. I didn't realize it was just
for original material. I was looking for feedback........
is that not the purpose of the forum?

Cover tuners are really only an issue because of copyright concerns - a lot of guys here use NoWhere Radio, and Waldo (the proprietor) is a regular contributor to these boards. If your stuff was on NWR and you did a cover, you WOULD get flamed for it - endangering Waldo's livelihood etc.

On your own space, I think you're probably okay - the big boys don't come trolling here looking for people to harass, and "hey check out my mix" is a reasonable use of cover material, though the technical legalities may be different.

As far as the "one post" thing - not a rule, but your best chance for getting feedback on your own stuff is to offer some other guys feedback on theirs. There's some pretty good reciprocity here.

I'll give you a listen now, get back to you...

Cool song - I'm not familiar with it. I was getting a kind of alt-country / Neil Young vibe from it.

Mostly good job recording. I'm listening on bad speakers at work, so can't give you much constructive criticism. Vocals seemed harsh, though. There was a percussive thing in the solo - string pops? - that wasn't working for me, but might be these speakers. The organ was a nice touch, but I'm not sure I'd just hold chords. Or if I did, I'd go with a darker patch, maybe - that one was screaming "96 Tears" at me.

Good clear sounds, though, and a good even mix. Drums sounded good (but remember my speakers). What are you recording with? What instruments are you using?

If you haven't figured it out already, the MP3 listening and feedback process is really just an elaborate excuse to talk about gear... LOL

Vocals - really nice. Great harmonies, nice style.

The rest of the mix - I gotta say I'm not crazy about any of the sounds, but you did a nice job blending them. I think it's a really good mix.

Good guitar playing. It's nice and smooth and subtle, but that tone is kind of "fizzy". Sounds like lots of pre and not enough post. But maybe that's what you're going for. A little Wayne Coyne like (or whatever the Lip's guitarist's name is).

That snare drum is the part that really needs work in my opinion. Too much verb, too much high end, and not enough body. Might be a little loud in the mix. It could use some variation too. It's always the same 2 and 4 throughout the song.

The song could use some variation or evolution too. Maybe don't bring in the harmonies so soon, or add something later. It just sounded the same all the way through. Gotta give me a reason to listen beyond the first verse and chorus - guitar solos are usually not enough.

Hey, keep posting and check out some others' mixes. Lots of good stuff here.

I thought it was okay. No criticism here.

It's not my favorite genre, but the recording was satisfactory.

I've also never heard the original, but it did have the Neil Young vibe to it.

I thank you posters for the feedback.MUCH appreciated!
The song is from The Mavericks a Tex-Mex sort of band
I guess you could say.
I fully intend to listen and make hopefully constructive comments
to anyone interested.
I was informed that I should have made contributions before
I posted 4 feedback, but I figured I should show some
stuff before commenting on others.

Not a bad tune. The quality of the recording is pretty good too.I dont here any tape hiss so thats a good thing.LOL.The harmonies are really good.Is this a husband/wife duo?I've never heard the orginal so I dont have a clue as to how close you came to the orginal or if that was even your intent.

Welcome to the board.Check out the many other forums on this BBS and post your knowledge on the various aspects of recording and music in general. This site is packed with recording info that will make your recordings even better than they are!;)

Mavericks are cool! Maybe ditch the 60s organ and toss in some accordion?

Anyhow, glad you shared it. You WILL get more feedback if you provide some to the other MP3 posts. I know after I get some feedback, I try to find whoever did me the favor and write up their last post (you can skip mine - it's been months) :D )

daf......

I geuss I'll have to find a new free accordion soundfont.
I only just figured out soundfonts 2 weeks ago.
What a revelation that was.
I use a computer and Cool Edit Pro I usually play all
the stringed instruments. I wanted to include a soundfont
so I just grabbed the accordion part from a midi file.
That was my wife singing backups BTW.
