An honest question:
Did I violate some protocol? I know I've been away for a while, so it's possible I missed some changes. I've got a lot of views but no replies, if I broke a rule by posting and not "reviewing" others I'm sorry. (I just don't think I have anything to offer on other's mixes right now.) Anyway, your thoughts are appreciated and if I broke a rule, I'm sorry.

Oh no, absolutely not :). While there are no rules per se, you aren't even violating any etiquette that some of us may be concerned with.

I don't know...sorry man. I certainly recognize your user name from before. I listened a bit last night, but just didn't care for the track that much. I can enjoy this style, but the rhythm just seems a little plodding and disjointed. I don't know if mixing can address that, or if it's the performance, or just me? I mean, your mix sounds good and all, maybe a little crowded? I could imagine more separation and things shifting focus more throughout the piece rather than everything all the time, but maybe that's what this song requires?

Personally, I also get less interested in people mixing other people's stuff as opposed to the do-it-yourself-ers...I'm just more comfortable with those people's situations, since I never try doing what you're doing here.

Ok, more than you wanted to know and still not much help, but maybe I got the ball rolling :)?

I understand what you're saying about not liking the track. I'm not a huge fan either. It's not that I did this professionally for anyone else, it's just a practice thing. When you say crowded, do you think more panning would help? I took the OH's out of the drums because I was trying to get a certain sound, so I may have contributed to the plodding feeling. I wanted it to sound like an old Lorretta Lynn or Dolly Parton record or something. You know? I'll take another run at it trying to make it feel more spacious. Thanks for the input.

Yeah, I think I meant crowded in terms of panning, or lack thereof. I totally get the feel you're going for...not a modern sounding mix at all. Different rules apply. I just don't think it needs to be that dense necessarily for this?

Yeah, the rhythm is somewhat undefined.
Now I know this isn't a rocker where the drums are supposed to bang out, but it may be that the fiddle and vocals are too up-front and kinda "floaty"...so the steady rhythm is sorta lost, and makes it sound like stuff is drifting in/out of temp....which it may actually be, in which case it's nothing you will fix with remixing.
If the rhythm is solid, just too low, I think you can bring the drums out/up more and not ruin the vibe of the song. That voice and fiddle will hang easily withg stronger rhythm section.

Otherwise....nice fiddle, and love that woman's voice!
Is that a regular band, or is she just a singer they used for the recording?
Does she do freelance and other kind of stuff, besides the country/blues flavor?

I'm always looking for a female singer with the right kind of tone in her voice.
I have a bunch of tunes that I would be a great fit for a female voice, but I just haven't found anyone around here that is right....they're all doing the R&B yodeling crap.....

The guy who posted the tracks said that it was his family making the recording for fun when everyone was together. He said he already fixed some "timing" issues. So yeah, they are there. I'm pretty sure I put the vocals to far up in the mix. I took another crack at it last night but I'm kind of burnt out on it. I did end up adding the overheads back and it helped the rhythm to move more. I lost sight of serving the song in my attempt to recreate a specific sound. Live and learn I guess. Thank you for the feed back guys. I do appreciate it.

You'll have the cows grazing and singing one meaningful word, "Mooooo~~ooo."
Mixing sounds very nice. So too the instruments and voice.
