hi all, i have a behringer UB1202 and a cheap vocal mic.. (dodge disco one) but i want some thing better, i have about up to $160 max (which would be really pushing the boat out!, i am really skint, but i dont know what to get... such as Shure SM57, a condenser, or a set of three mics (inparticular the Samson R21 3 pack - see - http://www.music123.com/Samson-R21-3--Mic-Package-i61705.music)

So i am asking you for your opinion, what should i get a set of dynamics, one better dynamic or one better condenser...

please also recommend models...

and can u tell me what u think of samson in general and inparticular the R21's

and if anyone knows of the Behringer x1800s 3 pack, can i tell me about it...

thanks alot :D

EDIT: i knew i would forget something... but i intend to record my acoustic guitar (rhythmic strumming :) and my electric guitar with indie rock type of music.. so could suggestions be relevent to this, thanks :D:D

Hmm, you could look for a deal on a couple of MXL 603's on ebay or something which would do pretty well with the acoustic and you could try close and room miking the guitar amp with those, although I don't know how well the latter would work.

ok thanks... :)

i also just read the FAQ i quote

"You can use omnis, or a pair of good cardioids in an X/Y configuration (capsules almost touching, angle of about 110 degrees between the two mics) and about two feet out from the instrument."

since i can't afford an expensive pair of decent mic's ( only the sets) can anyone recommend some omnis, thanks :D

I picked up a pair of 603's at GC yesterday for $149.00. If you want the shock mounts, the GC price is something like $45 each...tell them you've seen them on 8thStreet.com for $24.95. They'll give you a break.

Best of luck.

i thought i saw something about the Studio Projects B1 being good on acoustic? thats $100

Get a LDC mic.

what does everyone think of the behringers ECM8000 ,i 've just seen em - they're cheap :D

I wouldn't recommend omnis for your first mics. Check out some of the models of mics people have already recommended.

The first mic I bought specifically for recording was a Samson CO1.

Yeah it was cheap but now I don't use it (ever) so it was still a waste of money.

You can get much better mics for not much more money.

In years to come when you've got a locker full of good quality mics you'll still probably find use for your studio projects or MXL mics. I don't think I could say the same for Samson's.

I've never used behri mics.

if it were me - in the under 100 buck area i would look at the mca or cad gxl condenser mics. i keep on hearing decent things from folks about these.
but they might not suit you. apex have a line of inexpensive mics you might want to check out. also some of the cheaper audio technica some folks seem to like. or if like me your into building your own stuff tape op have a diy mic you can build thats pretty decent for 20 bucks using panasonic wma capsules. an old trick is to use a discarded speaker as a microphone.
ive used these before for laughs with good results. but mainly use them on rock guitar cabs. the choice of speaker has to be experimented with for best results. at soundclick.com/bmanning on the song lets move it man i used a spkr as a mic on a few tracks for laughs.

Hey Leno,

I would suggest you stay in the dynamic mic market. A Shure SM57 will be a great investment that you will still be using 20 years from now if you are still recording. A lot of people get really excited about buying condensors, but if you have a really low budget (like you have) you will only be get a low grade dynamic. Cheap dynamics are not as bad as they used to be, but they are still not great. A couple good (or great) dynamcis will be more flexible for you and also sound better when you start layering tracks of stuff.

How great the acoustic guitar track is going to be with a SM58 could be debatable.

Yeah, I would go with a SM57 instead. It will not give you a really shiney top end sound, but a 57 can give you a nice fosuced midrangey sound with plenty of body. I would take a 57 over most of the really super cheap condensors on the market.

The Studio Projects 'B' series are by far the best mics in that pricerange.

ye, thanks for all the comments, its really aided my decision, but i have decided to go with the SP B1, only because its a good price, i've heard lots of praise about it, and it also comes with a shock mount and everything, so there will be no more need for spending for a while..

thanks everyone.. oh and if u think i've made a good/bad decision, don't be afraid to say :p

The B1 should be an ok starter mic... and you can always upgrade later when your ready.

Have fun,
Don

I picked up a sm 57 for my first mic. I use it solely for vocals and i love it. I decided to stay with a dynamic mic for the versitility and found that it sounds great. For vocals get the shure windscreen that is specifically for it. Although i only use it for vocals for recording, i plan to use some live instruments and maybe some live stuff. I don't have much experiece with other mics around $100 but it seems like the sm 57 is offers the best in versitility where other mics maybe better in other specific uses.
