Hey guys.. just looking for a bit of input on some of my band's songs.. it's pretty heavy stuff, and my vocalist is a bit out there.. and it was quite a rushed self-done recording and mixing, but it's still leaps and bounds over anything we had before..

Anyways.. you can check it out here... http://www.scs.ryerson.ca/~mwarkent/mp3/

It was recorded on a Korg D1600.. I have all the seperate tracks burnt as .wav files, so I'm gonna work on remixing them on the computer.. as I mixed those in about 45 minutes.. so any ideas, hints, etc. is welcome.. retracking is not an option.. I'm back in Toronto for school.. anyways.. thats enough for now.

I listened to demo 3

It sounds like there might be some clipping in the cymbals; that's not very forgiveable in the digital realm (but my ears might be fooled too, I'm not an expert.. yet) but you also said re-tracking wasn't an option. (Still, I'd work on the mic'ing/leveling of those cymbals next time you do a recording session - what mic/preamp was used?

Frankly the hats, rides, and cymbals sounded pretty bad to me, but I bet with the proper application of effects you can get a sound out of them that suits the rest of the mix better.

Leveling on the guitars and drums overall seemed good to me. I like the thumpiness of the kick.

Have you applied any compression to the tracks or mix yet? I'm getting a weird pulsing feel that seems like a compression problem (but this isn't really my cup of music, so maybe you are going for that "pulse")

There probably is some.. I noticed clipping in a lot of the drum tracks after I tracked them.. I hadn't realized that clipping would only show up on the pre-fader section, and not on the master L/R.. so that's one thing that will definitely improve the next time we try. We used two SM57s for overheads, an SM57 for the snare (but there was tons of EVERYTHING in this mic.. I dunno.. gotta mess with that more next time). Not sure what the mic was on the kick.. large diaphragm, couldn't see a name on it. We got the mics from the only local music store.. I'm from a small town about 6 hours from the closest real city. These went directly into the XLR inputs on the Korg..

I applied an effect called Studio Limiter to the finished mix.. seemed to just bring up the volume..

I listened to 3 also, mainly because it's smaller & I'm on a dial-up.
I also thought the drums were the biggest problem. Don't know if it's a tuning issue, an EQ one or what but they're pretty dead.

check this out for some tips.

The bass seems pretty thin in the mix too, but I'm in headphones & not on my monitors.

Good job for a fist attempt.

My first recordings were on jam boxes, so you're way ahead of where I was.
:D

About tuning drums.. anyone have a link to some resources about how to do it? Neither me or my drummer really knows.. we just sort of made do with what we had..

mwarkentin,

I just finished listening to "I want it that way," I almost peeed in my pants, that was funny bro!

The mix is terrible, but when the end came, I had tears in my eyes.Reminded me of Tenacious D.

Lower the vocals, a lot, and make it blend with the music better.
You gave me a laugh over here, I'll check out more later.

peace.

ah

here's some constructive criticism....

yeah, defiantely i here that "pulsing" thing too.... sorta drives me nuts...lol

i'd say that the drum volumes should be ajusted too...i mean - as for there being a lot of bass drum and low sounding toms in some songs...and, more or less, no cymbals/snare.

Haha ok, the stuff I'm asking for suggestions on is the nonplus-demo stuff. The other thing was just something me and a friend did for fun this summer. :)

Just thought I'd clear that up.
