My new studio being my house! It's all hardwood floor and has a really open living room and kitchen, so I set up the drums in my living room, stuck the guitar and bass amp in my bedroom, setup my control room in the spare room and had some fun.

This is 100x better than recording in a practice room. Thank you hardwood floors.

So here's my first shot. Rough mix, but the drums already sound better than just about everywhere else I've recorded.

This band has no vox. It was just bass and drums and they recently found their guitarist. Their bass is through a big muff, so it's super distorted and fizzy. Hey, that's how they like it.

I did bass into the big muff into a radial j48. If I could go back I would've done bass into the di and sent that to my pre, and then put the through to the big muff into the bass cab and mic it. That way I would've gotten a clean bass low end to mix in. I read somewhere I think that the big muff takes a lot of the low end away. Blah.

Anyway, take a listen.

like you mentioned, the bass does'nt have any low end. it actually sounds thinner than a typical guitar track. the drums are way up front but there's not much in the mix so............ :D

as far as the music itself. i dig it. cool stuff man.

no problem, enjoyed listening to it. you might consider bringing the bass up a little since it's really playing more of a guitar role.

Posted a newer mixed. Rolled off the high end of the bass because it had tons of big muff shit going on up there that just sounded like ass (listen to both at the beginning when just the bass is playing and you'll hear it).

wow - that bass is definetly different.

I'm listening on phones, so this may not be completely accurate -

The toms sound pretty dang good. Snare is ok, maybe a bit more crack to it. Cymbals sound a bit thin, but not too bad - kick could really use some definition.

Not a big fan of the guitar tone, but I don't think it is your fault.

Maybe I'm just getting old..... :D

Thanks for the response. We're retracking bass guitar soon, so I can get botht he disorted and undistored to mix together. Wooo! One point for the engineer/mixer guy.

And the cymbals, I forgot to mention, were total shit. All of them had cracks and pieces missing. Sad. Youc an tell in the beginning with the toms, it's just ssss ssss sss, sounds like they're sizzling. Later when he changes to the hat it sounds much better (more like an actual cymbal).

Listened to the last mix you posted...Drums sound great...jam is kicking!Wish I could crank it up a bit but it's 6am(I'm getting ready for work)I agree this would benefit with some more prominent bass guitar...and overall addition to the low end would thicken it up a bit.I like the sounds your capturing so far...keep it up!

Thanks! Do you think the snare is a little too buried in the newer mix? Also, we're redoing bass on sunday! :D
