Here's my first crack at something that isn't heavy rock. I had a very talented pair come in a month ago. They're two parts of the Dave Matthews coverband Crash. Anyway this is kind of a scratch track to get the idea down. The bass sounds weird because it's played on the Triton Extreme and to me just doesn't sound right, but then again neither does the song without it so. Anyway here's my mix, I'd really just like some advice so when they come to record again I'll have some mixing ideas in mind.

Alright, where the hell are all of you. I really want some serious critiqing here. I'm not the type the cower and run when someone bashes something I do, I learn from these things, that's why I posted this song, so you all could point out my flaws that I'm blind to and I can fix them. So for the love of all thats good, review this damn song.

being a newb, I can't really give you any advice. To my ears though this is sounding really nice so far...love the snare sound!!

Wow Jonny....this is very cool.

Love your intro.

What are you using for the drums?

The piano work is great.

The acoustic is good too!

The mix sounds good to me.

TRUE :) :) :) :)

Are you guys serious? I've been doing this audio thing for a year and a half and everything I know I learned from right here, well and tweakheadz, tweakz guide is pretty amazing. The drums are my 1982 Tama Imperialstar that I scored at a garage sale for 300 bucks. The piano is a Triton Extreme, so is the bass that's why it sounds weird. Acoustic is a Guild mic'd with in an xy stereo pattern using ksm109's(first time I ever mic'd an acoustic in stereo). So I'm pretty excited that you guys don't think it's total shit, I practice mixing everynight for hours on end and it feels good to know I can make something decent.

PS Thanks for the snare comment, that same snare got bashed on this board a while back from another song from a different band, funny thing is they do sound completely different and the same person tuned it both times(he's a pro). I guess it's more about how you play it. The drummer was amazing to work with on this song, he'd heard the song once before this take.

well...I didn't say anything about the triton because you already did ;) ...that would be the only thing that I could really nitpick about....as far as the snare...it's all about getting the right sound for the paticular track you are working on....for that track, I don't think you could have gotten a more appropriate snare sound.

btw, what overheads did you use for the drums?

Also the ksm109's, not super thrilled with them due to the fact they make the cymbals slightly harsh sounding but they suffice.

Sorry True I just realized you might have been asking about my mics and so on about the drums. Audix's on the toms, Audix d6 on the kick, 57 on the snare, ksm109's for the overheads. The kick mic was going thru a joe meek 3q, snare and toms were thru the 002r, and overheads were thru the maudio dmp3. Superkick on the kick head, Ambassodors on the toms, and a powerstroke3 on the snare.

Slow download.....

Okay...... Nice sound. Good piano, nice balance. Got a Bruce Hornsby thang going on, nice and mellow.

I would turn down the snare a tad and bring the piano up. The piano could be front and center too, its a piano concerto.

Very cool, I'm a mellow now. I wish I had some weed :o

Lucky for me I do. Yeah I find the snare a bit loud, was wondering if it would bother anyone else. I was really torn between panning the piano or centering it. I ended up panning. I also originally had the piano up front but the guitar player said he's supposed to be the focus of the song, so that's kinda by their request, though if they heard it my way I think they'd like it. When they come back for the full blown recording I'll post the end results, should be very good, I'm pretty much the weakest link in the chain because they're amazing musicians. That's kinda why I posted, I feel like I need to step up my game. So keep 'em coming.

Hes wrong. :D The pianny IS the tune, IMHO. Its a mellow Bruce Hornsby tune.!

BTW, I went to the St Louis Conservatory. Its gone now, it was in U City. I like it there, havent been back in years.

Well a very wealthy businessman has purchased a lot of the Loop property and has been redoing the place a couple blocks from the Blueberry Hill area. He's actually doing a kickass job, he opened a venue called The Pageant which is spectacular inside and often hosts huge name acts, eventhough it only sits about 3000. My favorite place to see a show in fact. Kind of a modern version of The Fox Theater.

DavidK is right - sure does sound like Bruce Hornsby....

Very nice mix on this, and I think you've done really well in such a short time recording.

I'm really embarrassed to say I have no idea who Bruce Hornsby is.

Ok so I googled Bruce and it seems that I do know who he is, even if it is just that one song, and yeah, lol, I can see where they got the inspiration. Just wait til you hear the guitar player sing. Dead ringer for Dave Matthews.
