So....time to review some mixes before I start the burn!

First we have our epic closer. It's called "Lully". Starts with acoustic and drums, ends with big distortion and..well more drums. haha. Careful guys, there is some yelling/screaming in this. But lots of glorious singing as well. Try to disregaurd what you may not like (although it is melodic..ha!), and comment on the mix/performance!

Second we have our all acoustic ballad. It's a really nice song I think, and again - an epic ending to the song....haha we're big on those. Guitar recorded twice and panned a little to each side, only one singer - his voice is dubbed a bunch towards the ending. Here, mostly mix comments and critisms (however, if you want to talk about performance, I'm sure the singer would love to hear).

After a few days, I'll post up 2 new songs (while will be distorted and screamy and singy too though! haha). Let's say, as a rule of thumb....August 5th or 6th?

Thanks guys, remember I'd love to hear ANY and ALL comments on ANYTHING!!! hahah.

ok, well im impressed with the tracking. The drums, bass, guitar, vocals were done very well. The drums level was a bit too strong imho. Both drums and guitar could be moved back just a tad and not quite so in the face. The singing was good, very dry as with the instruments, but the tracking was fine. There`s a few intonation issues in the melody singing on the first tune that I`d address before burning, as if the screaming was going on while the singing was being cut. That in itself could throw a singers pitch. The 2nd tune seemed fine. Pretty neat. Oh I would put some synth pads on that vamp on the first tune as it leads to the end to give it a little sky to work against.

Ok, you said anything goes. This is recorded pretty well. The basic ideas are great but why would would you put that screaming in there over the vocal melody? For some reason that just grated on my. I think it may have worked better with a kind of effect to blend it with the rest of the music. I would also blend the verse in the same way. it is a bit dry for my taste. There are also some outta key spots in the singing. There are my bitches.

On the other hand the songwriting was great. The ideas were good. I liked the guitar playing, and i really liked the drumming especially on the first tune where the drummer kicks it in the as on the toms. That ruled. All in all i think you are on to something just needs a bit of refining. Keep it coming!

I listened to "Lully".........the vocal is a little too dry I think, a little verb might help them sit a little better................I love the screaming in the background.........it makes it a very unique song in a good way....

well it's different that's fer sure.. wonder what the hell has that guy so pissed off??

I would say the recordings seem to do a good job of capturing the performances. I feel a little push/pull tempo wise sometimes.

Lully was very cool in a very quirky way. Love that snare sound. I like the dryness too. Might be heavy in the low mids (I don't necessarily know what I'm talking about when I say that stuff). It just feels like it could be a little brighter. The kick might be able to come down some.

That's awesome you guys dig the recording of it.

I still seem to have this problem where it always sounds a little "home" or "basement"...and less "studio" or "pro". It's never a really warm mix. I've gotten a lot closer now than ever before (mad props to OZONE! ha.)...but I'm not totally there yet.

So you think this is decent stuff for this gear:

delta44 and ntrack
mxl 603s (2)
sm58's/57's
Studio Projects C1
M Audio SP Bx5 Monitors
DMP2 preamp
Behringer mx802a

??

Excellent hook. I've told chicks this very thing ... while they were running away from me into their
mother's house !!! :D

I understand ALL THE WORDS with great ease on the first listening. Thank you.

At this 1:27, when this scalar accompaniement figure begins in contrapuntal motion against the vocal melody, thank you for mixing this properly, as if that guitarist is sitting behind the vocalist. It does not step on the vocal at all, and it is very effective for the brief moment it appears. Don't mess with that.

And I think you can re-use this later, with great effect.

Your guitar has some very, very minor intonation problems. But that's totally cool in this song.

The complete breakdown at 2:40 is excellent. And then a few ragged breaths ... yes .....

Great time for a bitchin' guitar solo here after the second 'sigh' use the third one at 2:50 to launch the guitar solo, use it as a bridge to what you do so well at the end, and you could even take a tiny part of the guitar solo bridge ... and use it as a repetitive 'idee fixee' to play over, and mixed very far back ... to play over the hooks and harmony vocals as you take the song out ...

OR even better

You could bring back the material in the guitar I liked so much at 1:27, this time voiced with the electric guitar. Perhaps you could make a solo bridge out of that material at 1:27 ... and finally use the little scalar motion in the elctric guitar as the 'repeated' figure mixed behind the harmony vocals and hooks as you take the song out.

Ahhhh, nice harmony vocals, and mixed well out front, ahhh, almost a lead 'harmony' vocal here.

And the hooks in front of that ... EXCELLENT, very nice writing, very, very marketable.

I would put a leslie type circumaural delay on those hooks appearing in front of the harmony vocals at the end, maybe even a touch of phasing, or flanging ...

Wow, cool tune, good writing ... good mixing. Thanks for the collectible !

I think violin, viola or cello ruin it IMHO ... ROFL !

Tube plug-ins

Try some tube plug-ins to add warmth especially on the harmony vocals.

I like the lead vocal more 'dry', the acoustic guitar could stand some warming up.

Tube plug-ins, give 'em a shot, just don't over use them.

But I don't think you are any where close to 'over processing' or 'over producing' anything.

Hell, if you are compressing the lead vocal ... use less

now THAT is what I call an awesome comment on my mix/performance. You are the man. haha.

anyway, the singer give his thanks to you for the compliments. haha.

as for the tube plugins - any tips to some free/very very cheap ones? if you havn't noticed i got a budget budget budget studio, making do with what i can when i can. haha.

also, I added some reverb (very very light) to both these songs...they sound better thanks for the tip. more natural actually. not so dry, although still very dry...haa just better. very light. hahaahhaha.

we were actually thinking of adding some jimbe conga drums (very light and simple) at the end of "hear me out." In addition, we have a violinist (just a friend really) coming in on tuesday, just to try some stuff out (sorry if you dont like it! haha...I can repost when he's done, if it's ok.).

Other than that, did you listen to "Lully"? I'd like to hear your critque of that too.
thanks agian.

Violin

As the violinist develops a part, I hope I can 'learn' from him, what I don't hear in this tune.

If you want me to provide additional instruments, for a section sound, or for overdubbing.

That's what I do, I play violin, viola and cello.

I will be VERY interested in what your violinist does, as nothing 'strikes' me at this time that is appropriate for this piece.

Please PM me or email me, when you repost a mix with violin, and yes ... PLEASE post it for all of us here.

You're a freak!

I mean that in the nicest possible way.;)

The recording is good, though a bit heavy in the low-mids. Mostly on the snare. The acoustic is bit boomy down low on "Hear Me Out" as well.

This could also use some space. It's pretty dry. Maybe that's what you were going for. If so you were successful. :p

Personally I would have added just a bit of room 'verb to tie it together sonically.

The songs, and performance are good. A few minor pitch issues, but I wouldn't fix 'em. They add to the vibe.

tite... alright, maybe another day on these 2 songs and then I'll post 2 new ones.
