Mixing and Mastering.
Ok i am thinking about getting the Mackie onyx mixer with the firewire card. I was having a look for firewire soundcards (as i expect one is needed to connect the mixer to my computer) but they were all hundreds of pounds.
Someone please tell me that you can get a decent firewire sound card for about the same price as a decent normal soundcard.

What about the Presonus Firebox? I've been very happy with mine...it was $600 odd Australian dollars.

Do you need a soundcard or does the Mackie act as the interface?

With the Onyx all you need is a Firewire port. It IS your audio interface...

If you're getting the mixer with the firewire card, you don't need another firewire soundcard. All you need is a firewire port on your motherboard. If your mobo don't have one, you can get a pci firewire card for a few bucks

But it's only a pair in and out, and it's summed through the stereo buss.

So forget direct FW outs to your HD.

You only get stereo out, but I'm pretty sure you get a bunch of inputs - at least 12 into the PC

But no direct outs. This is a major fuckup on Mackies part.

So you sum 12 channels to stereo and send it to your computer.

Good luck editing that!

Mackie ONYX 1620 quote:
"FireWire I/O card, which bridges the analog-to-digital gap by providing up to 18 independent channels of high-quality 24-bit/96kHz audio that you can plug right into your FireWire-equipped Mac or PC. And bring a stereo mix back from your computer for monitoring purposes."

The Onyx FireWire Card allows you to stream up to 18 channels of 24-bit digital audio to your Mac (OSX 10.3.5 or greater) or PC (Win XP). These show up in your audio software as 16 individual audio inputs, plus a stereo L/R mix. You can also send two channels of audio back from the computer to the mixer for monitoring purposes.

Audio coming back from the computer is conveniently monitored through the Control Room Source matrix, where it is routed to the Phones, Control Room, or Main Mix outputs.

Pretty neat!!!!!!!!!!!
