Accurate? My latest project with Tascam US1641 (usb2.0) used 14 input tracks during drum recording and 72 running playback tracks from Cubase. Putting a limit on max channels for usb to 8 is inaccurate.

72 tracks in cubase has nothing to do with the interface.

No, but it does have to do with usb 2.0 I think. I run my audio with an external drive (don't ask why, Someone told me it was best). It is hooked up via usb 2.0. The interface runs off a separate pcie 2.0 card. If my existing computer had firewire, I probably would have gone that route.

As I read the post in question, the aside about track-counts was really just a rough, conservative, rule of thumb. As is the case with rules of thumb generally, real-world results depend on lots of other variables.
I agree that the post seemed (based on what little I know) very well-founded and well-explained.
It's actually kind of refreshing for someone to be conservative about what digital audio systems are capable of ... manufacturers and assorted sellers are usually a lot more inclined to tell you all the great things their products would be able to do in an otherwise ideal world. While it's somewhat interesting to know what - say - a $200 software package can do in a $10,000 computer with another $10,000 of audio equipment, the practical realities are usually slightly different.

Agreed. I just think it would be unfair if someone were to take that as absolute fact and write off using an interface because it wont work. Correct me if I am wrong but I believe you cannot chain together USB devices either. Thus limiting expandability. When I upgrade my interface I am sure I will go with firewire or wait and see what USB 3 brings. For the entry level price though, the usb was the most bang for the buck-for me anyway.

out of curiosity, what is the most common number of inputs needed at one time for most HR?
I would guess 2 tracks at once, is the most common.
Live bands w/ drummers?
