tried this question in the newbie thread and got a little response. Thought I wouls try here and see what you all say.

Ok, I'll try this here, didn't get too much help on the other post.

I am just getting into digital recording, have been using an old Tascam 424. So far, I have been considering 2 possible routes (cause they have seemed to be the best 2 i was exposed to.)

Option 1: I was going to purchase the M-Audio Delta 1010 Soundcard and the Octane Preamp since both had 8-10 In/Outs and 8 preamps

but then I wa hearing a lot of people buying...

Option 2: The Presonus Firepod which also has the 8 preamps, but uses fire wire instead of sound card.

Which is a "better" way to go, firewire or thru a sound card? What do you all think about my 2 choices, i'd appreciate any suggestions on ways to go.

My set up will most likely never move. With the Delta 1010 i was thinking of using the M-Adio Octane (just cause they were the same brand and seemed to match.)

But then I came across the Firepod which seemed to have pretty much the same inputs, but used firewire which I thought was just "helping" to eliminate the need for the expesive soundcard. SO is using firewire comitting yourself to using that interface, where as using the Delta 1010 I could use different interfaces. Is there a scalablilty issue?

I've heard mixed things about the Firepod. I own the Octane but have not yet tried the optical output. It's a nice pre, though. I'm sure it can't compare to a Great River or pre's of that class, but I'm happy with it.

If it matters I am going to mostly be recording my metal band and eventually other styles of "guitar" music.

I guess still the main question I have is what are the advantages disadvantages of using firewire vs pci?

They're both pretty good, though PCI is a little faster. Firewire gives you more plug-n-play options.

What negative things have you heard about the Firepod? Just curious.

I don't remember exactly, but it was stuff I read right here at HR. Do a search using firepod as the keyword.
