Firewire Interface or External Hard Drive?

hey there,
I have a Macbook and I'm looking to buy both an external hard drive and an interface of some sort. I would like to be able to record 2 simultaneous tracks, although 4 would be nice. My problem is that I only have one Firewire port, and not much internal disk space. Does it make sense to get a USB hard drive and a Firewire interface, or vice versa?

And secondly, is the "line in" on the Macbook decent enough to record demo quality recordings? If it is, perhaps the interface isn't all that necessary.

USB hard drives are usually considered to have too slow of transfer speeds for audio applications

that being said, you'll need the firewire port for the some type of interface. when it comes down to it, if you're only mixing a handful of tracks at a time, the internal HD should be fast enough.

Why do either? Most FireWire devices have a pass-thru connection for attaching additional devices, and you can chain them... I think 16 devices deep.

ok, cool. i didnt' realize that you could run one device through the other. i'll look into that. thanks.
