I'm a little confused about the purpose. Could one of these External Hard Drives potentially stop recorded tracks from skipping? Because I have that problem where often the track skips because of my computer specs.

Potentially, yes an external drive could help. But there's many causes for "skipping", pops, clicks, stutters, glitches, etc. Basically, it's your computer running out of resources, cpu, memory, hard drive caching and such.

To get better help, can you describe what you're running?? computer, DAW, tracks, interface, vst's, etc...

There's quite a bit of help in the computer section. Be sure to browse through there and look for similar questions.

Most times external hard drives are used for file storage (or backup).

I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate 32-Bit on a Dell Vostro 1500 (haha I know... :laughings:) but it's a matter of money so I'm trying to find cheaper alternatives to replacing the computer and/or OS.

I use an Alesis MultiMix8 USB 2.0
on Cubase 4 LE

8 Mono Inputs
and 2 Mono Outputs (L/R)

Dell Vostro 1500:
2 GB RAM
1.60 GHz Processor
42.7 GB of 149 GB Hard Drive left

Basically the worst specs for recording but like I said it's a money issue

There are many threads on this forum about people with 'skipping' or other recording issues. Basically you need to shut down all the programs runnign in the background - not easy with Vista.

If that isn't a laptop, my computer guy said a second internal
drive was a faster connection from the cpu than an external one.
Plus i think they are cheaper.

You should be able to eliminate skipping (glitches) by increasing your buffers.
What do you have them set at?

Because I have that problem where often the track skips because of my computer specs.

What are you doing when the skips occur...just basic tracking...or are you editing/mixing, and if so, are you using a lot of plugs on the tracks?

Tracking skips are most likely related to hard drive processes...mixing with lots of plugs is more about CPU processes.
