Any suggestions on what brand of laptop to go with the firepod? Also, what is the minimal memory, harddrive speed, cpu speed I should look at to drive 10 tracks at a time (with spdif)

I can get this computer for about $950
http://www.hp.ca/products/static/notebooks/nx9600/index.php

Which has Intel Pentium 4 Processor 550 (HT) 3.4GHz / 802.11b-g Wireless / 17-inch WXGA+ WVA / 512MB DDR2 / 80GB HDD / CD-RW/DVD Combo / Windows XP Pro / Notebook PC

I don't know anything about laptops (know a good load on desktop)... so is this a good deal or should I be looking at what many are using: the Toshiba???

Thanks

$950!!??

If you can get the computer that you linked to for $950 I'd freakin' jump on it. Get the 7200rpm HD though. Also check to see if the video card is PCI-e. If it is you may need to look elsewhere, PCI-e doesn't play well with audio production and Firewire soundcards. Look here for more information on that.

I have a P4 2.8 with 80gb 7200 HD with an M-audio 1814, works for what I need. Coupled with a Behringer ADA8000 for 16 tracks of live recording. Good luck!

If you have a look on the presonus site, there's a comment on there about an incompatability with the ATI Radeon mobility chip.

Having said that, my Asus notebook has Radeon mobility graphics chip, and it works fine with the firepod.

The other thing about that unit is it uses the P4, not the Pentium M, so it will require more cooling, and so will probably be noisier

J/ Johnny, if you think thats cheap, go to TigerDirect.com

tigerdirect...hmmmm, looks interesting. I'm looking for an inexpensive box for my mother. just what I was looking for.

Tigerdirect has pathetic customer service. Caveat Emptor.
