Is there some unstated limitation in the FIREPOD that keeps it from being able to slave to S/PDIF input at 96 kHz? My new FIREPOD (which replaced the old FIREPOD whose S/PDIF ports died completely) will only sync at 44.1 and 48.

It's just a limitation of the S/PDIF protocol itself.

Uh... no, it isn't. The FIREPOD can output 96 kHz via S/PDIF and my M-Audio FW1814 can sync to it. S/PDIF has no set clock rate, and the word clock is derived from the way it is encoded. It can thus support arbitrary clock rates up to the limitations of a particular device.

You're probably thinking of ADAT lightpipe.... (Many ADAT lightpipe devices support higher rates, but it's nonstandard.)
