fire wire channels

I don't think that question makes sense. It depends on your audio interface and your computer.
 
FireWire is the connectivity to your computer. You can buy an interface which connects to your computer via Firewire. It all depends on the interface itself how many tracks you can record at once.
The Firewire just sends the data to your computer.
 
Is there a limit ?

I know that USB can only transfer a certain amount of data. I figured that there was a limit on firewire also. I was thinking of getting a firewire unit like
the MOTU 828mkIII or something like that. Could you run two of these together to get 16 tracks of inputs?

Sure, I don't see why not.
 
If you have an ADAT, you can use the 8 analog ins on the MOTU and the 8 of the ADAT.
