finally i have a song, or part of a song! this is my first recording ever. i have recorded a couple of riffs in the past (on an old camcorder) but this is my first shot at a recording where i can record more than one track. i say it's only part of a song because there's no bass no drums and the guitar is only halfway done. but i wanted to put something on here so bad! i know i have to redo it sometime, because as you'll notice i'm not that great of a singer and the guitar is pretty sloppy. there are so many things i have learned from doing one simple recording (and a million things i want to change). it won't be for awhile though because i took back my headphones (they were messed) and i kept the money (and have blown it) because i'm broke. now i gotta scrape up some more money to buy new ones. man, now i can't record (that sucks) till i get new ones, i'm stupid. anyway here's my first song (or part of a song) after 4 long months of computer and driver problems. it's at i-drive under jj9, it's the only song there.

Not a bad start. I am sure after you make those few changes it will be ready for the radio. ;)

not bad (was that sarcasm), but not good? tell me what you really think. i have let a few friends listen to it an they like it, but they don't know shit about recording. so i put it here for some honest opionions from people who know what the hell there talking about. i know i ain't no sonusman yet but hey i'm trying! after all without hr.com i probably wouldn't dare to let anyone listen to it. thanks for the help everybody!

i almost forgot, thanks for listening fishmed. i guess i'm just insecure cause i'm so new at this.

I don't know if I'm on a seventies kick tonight, but this has a mellow kind of thing going on. There's a couple good ideas floating around :)--about your voice (which is way better than mine, so please don't take this as negative criticism)-- i think it would sound cool if you sang this lower. At around 2:18 you start to, and it sounds good. If you can't, try chain smoking to bring that beautiful Lou Reed/Leonard Cohen crack to it. I like the "I wanna light it up"-- I think with some more instrumentation and work this could be pretty cool.

Knowing this is an unfinished product makes it kinda hard to make sensible comments about it...percussion and bass would definitely fill it out and bring order to the composition....I liked the way your voice sounds on the word "down", when it sorta slides on that one word....I didn't mind the high pitch of the vocal, but it got kinda out of tune some....the panning left and right of the guitar is a cool idea, but be a little more subtle with it if you can, because it sorta sounded more like knob turning than an illusion of movement....the absolute best thing you can do is listen to this song from more than one source..car, jambox, home stereo..then you'll be able to hear things you haven't noticed before that can be easily fixed..I know that's boring, but is it SO necessary to polish a creation...at this point the song is embryonic in its growth...there's a nice tune in there that needs to be a good tune, or maybe even a great tune...try to be an honest critic of yourself too...if you hear something that's not quite right, then fix it if you can...be harder on yourself to get a more complete vision of what you had in mind originaly to record...and keep writing and playing and recording, creating and crafting....gibs

Sorry JJ,

I meant it to be a compliment. I know that you have not polished it up the way you want it to sound, so I thought this recording/mix is a good start. I think the tune itself is radio friendly... justs needs that polishing.

No need to be sorry I was just being a dumbass! This is somewhat monumental for me. It's the only thing musically I've really ever done. I've never been in a band, never played a gig, I don't ever jam with anyone. the only person thats ever heard my songs is me. this is the first song i ever let anyone listen to, and i felt vulnerable at first. like all of the songs i wrote could have been shit and a big watse of time. or the best thing i've ever done. i'm sure most people remeber that first time of opening themselves up in some way, the anxiety of waiting for some sort of validation. now i'm just rambling. anyway thanks for listening fishmed!

Nate, i think i'll try it singing it lower to see how it sounds. your voice can't be much worse that mine. man i think thats the hardest part of recording is getting over hearing your own voice (was for me). thanks for listening!

Gibs, i know what you mean about the knob thing. i pretty much know what to fix now the problem is (one more? no!!!) how to fix it? thanks for your views and opinions they've helped more that you know.

jimmy

regarding the knob thing, just maybe pan left/right at moments when there's not a note being played...that can be tricky with fast stuff but if you do it right you can almost fake out two different channels...of course you could actually record two tracks, one an "answer back" and it would actually be two channels...you could also pan slowly on longer riffs to get a doppler effect of "hearing movement", like when you hear a train pass.....have fun with it....gibs
