Krakit

Rzzzzz!
I've never submitted anything to the MP3 clinic before. Mostly for the simple reason that my studio space has been in a huge shambles for years. Well, I recently agreed to submit a purely improvised piano piece for a compilation on another BBS that I haunt. Since this required simply shredding on the natch, it wasn't that big a deal for me to do.

This work represents one in a series of stream of conciseness improvisations that started without a single idea in my head. Each attempt for this compilation was built from openings that my fingers simply fell upon at random. Since, this method of composition is bound to create a plethora of missed and or sour notes as well as off time passages, I have entitled this piece, “Wabi Sabi”

Wabi Sabi expresses the Japanese aesthetic that there is beauty in imperfection. This philosophy pretty much sums up the feelings that I wish to humbly evoke with this musical offering of spontaneous creation.

That’s about it.

Listen to it if you like,

Wabi Sabi

can you enable downloads so I can steal errr, I mean listen to it without hiccups?

very cool.. I enjoy listening to piano stuff like this. it's pretty much just what you said.. no mix comments.. just dug it.. what are you using for piano?

Ok... I'm hearing the hiss of 1000 years... and below that veil of
magnetic whispers I hear some awesome piano playing. If that's not a real piano, it's a HELLUVA good piano patch.
I can hear the hammers dropping.

Gotta make sure flat-9 gives this a spin... he'd wanna make you an honorary
son of his, no doubt :D

Some clipping around 2:23-2:30...

Really great stuff... emotive, and passionate. Thanks for breaking down,
finally, and jumping into this place with both feet.

I want to thank you both (Participant and B. Sabbath) for taking the time to listen to my little offering.

I have high hopes of going completely digital soon (if I can get financially around it).

I've got my eye on the MR-8 that appears to be so popular.

I don't really need more than 2 inputs at any given time, while I'm working by myself.

I don't hear any problems with tape hiss on this but, then again, My high frequency hearing ain't what it used to be.

The playing and composition was first rate though I must confess that hearing some of the stuff you were doing, it's hard to tell if the piece was written note for note that way or if there was some degree of improvisation as you were going along and we are not suave enough to pick up on some boo boos? Is this how the composition is supposed to go, note for note?

I also detected some double tracking in spots where it seemed that more then 10 fingers were involved. Is this so? If so, you did a very good job of blending that together.

As for recording notes; I felt the bottom end was a bit boomy around 100hz on my speakers. The mids and highs were smooth and very pleasant sounding. nudge the bass back about 2 db and it should help things out nicely.

Great performance!

Cheers! :)

krakit, thanks for sharing that with us. Yep, i heard the hiss and the clipping too, but that doesn't change the fact that this was a great and very inspired performance. And with all the a capella tunes on the board right now, this is kinda your "a capella" piece.

Party pants mentioned flat nine earlier. You should check out the improvisational piece he did a couple months back. The guy is a monster!

I find that depending on what system I play this back on, the hiss is either very in your face, or negligable.

As for the writing and or composition of the piece. This was completely made up on the spot without overdubs, multitracking or any other post production whatsoever. The point of the excersize was to improvise something on the spot straight to two tracks au' natural. There was to be no polishing! Just sit down, compose, stand up and boom, you're done.

So, since I only have 10 fingers at last count, there wasn't anything that couldn't be done by at least that many. ;)

Thanks for the comments!

I did take the opportunity to listen to it (if the "Outta My Cage" piece is what you refer to) and I was very impressed by it myself.

I wonder if I'll hear from flat-9 in regards to this work?

Yeah, great playing.

It sounds like you pushed the tape a little bit. I heard some notes fuzzing out. The hiss was low but definitely there.

The boy can play.

I'm not much into freestyle playing although that's 90% of what I do when I sit at a piano (I just don't record it).

In any case, the talent is showing big time. The nit-picky things have already been said...good job!

The clipping makes me cringe every time I hear it.

The thing is, I set the levels, played as loud as I thought I was ever going to play, tweaked the levels some more, and then hit record.

Sometimes, you just get carried away and end up pounding the thing harder than you thought you ever wanted to, especially on an improve.

Hey Carl,

Man pick a forum, and go with it!!

Man that is fantastic, very creative, you've got some amazing talent Keith Emerson comes to mind, but you might be even better.

If you can play like that, how come your out of work.

Absoluetly fantastic!!

Better than Keith Emerson???? You must be high!

I'm not ready to touch EMO's boots.

There are tons of people better than me, let me assure you.

Thanks for the compliments though. :D

I was a professional musician for a few years, but there is no dependability nor stability in music. When I got married, I changed directions and took on computers as what I thought was a far more reliable career path.

I'm considering giving lessons and trying to find a situation to play out with again, if only because I'm not making ANY money now and my UI has been in dispute for weeks now. :(

Very cool man....an enjoyable listen....
at 1:46 is where I would beef up the arrangement....that is if you were going to develop it further...

Well done.

Great playing

The quality of the recording isn't there. The Tascam isn't doing you any favors. You are very talented and what a great piano patch!
