OK - I'm new to all of this. I just want to lay down some simple acoustic/possibly vocal tracks on my handy dandy G3....have a little bit of control over effects and mix...and I don't want to invest $300 to do it just yet. Anyone have a suggestion? Thanks! Michelle

I'm new to this too.
I recently purchased a G4 to use for my graphic design work
as well as home recording. Many people talk about soundcards ... but
I just burned a CD using a RCA to mic input from my synth
and I was pleasantly suprised of the quality of the recording.
If you just want to do quality demo recordings ... then (I think) all you need
for now is a digital audio recording software (like Emagic Logic Silver
$250 or so) ... and a way to imput the signal to the mic in the back of
the computer. The software I mentioned has some mixing capabilities.
Again ... I'm just recording electronic instrumental music
from a synth. It may be a different story if you are recording accoustic ...
but I thought I would try and respond since nobody else is.

Fogg...
Thanks for steppin' up to the plate and takin' a swing! Oddly enough - I use my mac for design work as well. The recording is strictly a hobby. I downloaded a piece of shareware that records, has some mixing capabilities, and effects. Like you - I bought a 1/4" to 1/8" converter and just plugged right in. I'm sure there's a better way - but I'm clueless as to what it would be. Thanks again!

There are better ways. They just cost more ... particually for the Macs. A good soundcard for the Mac costs a pretty penny.
And ... in your case ... a good mic and mixer isn't cheap either. The way I am approching this is to purchase what I need to get started and when my knowledge and ability increases then I will take in more gear.
Good luck.

I went to digibid.com and online auction
and bid $30.00 on Opcode studio vision 3.5.
So far I am the highest bidder. I have an older mac which I used Opcode musicshop on, a
cheap software package for midi which I found
very user friendly and liked alot. Alas I have caved into the pressure and bought a pc
(shudder) and now have found out the studio
vision software is mac compatable only. It is
about a $500.00 list package. If I am not out
bid soon I am going to have to call digibid and retract my bid or buy the software package and resell it or install it on my old
mac which I really don't think will run it anyway. You should check out digibids music/
computer section, they seemed to have some
good deals and some other stuff for macs.
