Finally...Some Vocals - Be Gentle

Well I finally got the guts to post one of my songs with vocals.

I can't sing as loud as I would like because I live in a flat (apartment for those in the US).

I did not put much effort in to the vocals or lyrics as It is more as an experiment to see how my voice went with the song.

I have not included the full song, just the intro and first verse.

ps. Don't comment on my duff lyrics.

I dig it..

I don't see anything wrong with the vocals... I even hear a touch of Lenoerd Cohen in there...

The direct acoustic bugs me... It's that rubbery sound that kills it,

Im hearing alot of high frequency nuances that are a bit distracting on the guitar track.... Did you have the high eq all the way up on the guitar.. (the eq thats right on the guitar)??

Try miking the Acoustic....Semi acoustics are handy for live, but It's better to mic them in the studio...

Other than those things..... I really dig your tune... and don't be shy about your voice.. It's great for that style of singing

Nice drum sound also....
 
By the way... the high frequency distracting thing that I mentioned was on the acoustic rythm track...

The lead guitar is good
 
I will hopefully be getting a Joemeek JM47 Condenser Microphone soon so I can mic up the guitar. It sounds crap though my dynamic mic so thats why I do it direct.

OT - is this a good mic for vocals and guitar?

I set the tone control on the guitar right down.

I'll try playing around with some eq to see what I can do.

dig it...sounds good...nice relaxing, sunny day kind of groove...i agree..don't be shy with your voice..the singing is good...just be real about it and it will sound good...we'll know otherwise..hehe..i'd like to hear the full version.. i didn't have a problem with the direct acoustic...don't let anyone fool you...you can go direct with your acoustic instruments...you just have to play around with eq until it is comfortable to listen to...get good at doing both however, since it is always beneficial to have a rounded knowledge...if you have time, check out my cuts at

i coulda used more vocals.....

since it was an experiment to see how your voice went with the song ill say that was a sucess...again i wanted more vocals......

other than the few things pointed out already, it was pretty darn good.....i like the feel of it,,,you did a good job with the drum and bass programming......
 
The vocals arent bad. You would probably sound good doubled on choruses if you want a little more punch. Give us the full song.
 
god i love this. i agree with the "sunny day song" comment..though, it also has that gray sky quality at the same time (pretty gray sky..no less).

I see this as the perfect background music for a video collage of like your "little girl growing up/first steps/graduation/wedding day/first house".

That inexplicable happy/sad emotion that only music can bring out. marvelous. Technically speaking...I liked the direct acoustic a lot....I thought it sounded nylon...i dig. Also, the drums and bass are awesome...some of the most convincing synth stuff I have heard on here. Vocals -mmmmm....such a nice lou reed feel. I need like an 8 minute version of this song...with a lot more vocals - ok? :)

I think that the song has a good foundation. The first thing that Inoted, was the direct acoustic. Throw a mic in front of that thing and record both signals. Mix them together with a little Pan to give you some space and you will get the guitar to sound more alive. Can't remember who brought that up before me, cause I am too lazy to look, but he was right. Kinda reminds me of that song "Everything is gonna be all right... Rock-a-bye". Don't remember who it is by. Anyway good job.

I gave recording the acoustic with my dynamic mic another try and its still alot worse than the direct sound. I guess I will have to wait untill I get my condensor. Any other tips to make the direct acoustic nicer??

I also think your vocals are good for this song -- turn them up some in the mix, don't be shy! :) Great laid back feeling. I don't think you are going to have a choice on micing the guitar until you get a condenser -- I think it's just fine for now, just a bit too "clear" since it was direct. Please put up the full version! Keep it up.

Hi there,

I go direct into on track of the board throug a MIC pre (Actually, I use a preamped output from the back of my Trace elliot TA50R, but just direct with some comp would be fine. Then I mic the soundhole with an Audio Technica ATM41a which is not the greatest mic, but works well for the acoustic. Lemme see if I have a sample and I will post it.

Try This a Sigma SDR-41 (Solid Top Dreadnaught with Rosewood sides and Back) with an ATM 41A Mic and Direct (Seymour Duncan Sadducer) mixed.

Thanks, I'll give this method a try. Only need to find a way to get rid of the PC noise now.
 
In the style of Lou Reed...but it IS your stuff...great....nice vocals...you're a lucky person to have a disinctive voice like that. The solo guitar is tasty too.... I'd put in another vote for the full version too (now that I have a cable hookup!!)
