My approach to choosing monitors is simple but effective:

Buy the speakers that make your favorite CDs sound great and make your recordings sound like shit. The more noticeable this gulf is, the more accurate those monitors will be for your purposes.

I used this approach and bought some sweet DynAudio BM-15 speakers.

Yes. The thing (or rather, one of the things) with Yamaha NS10s was if you can get your recording to sound good on these, they'll sound good on most everything else.

I tried the Truth Audio TA-1P setup at Southern Tracks, and I loved the way it exposed my mix. I bought a pair for my studio and haven't removed them since. I got the pair for around $500 used.

I just thought of something, but I thought everyone did this, but don't you guys have regular speakers like a pair of Logitech's?
I have a 2.1 speakers from phillips, which are two computer speakers with a sub(a must)
and I play my music through them cause that's what I use to listen to music and the average person doesn't have $300+ speakers!

THen if I am super serious, I put it on my mp3 and play out my chitty azz car speakers which really have no bass.

To me these are different tests that ensure that the things I want people to hear get heard.

I have actually spent some time learning about .wav's and .mp3's, learning the best way's to transfer my music into something everybody can listen to, and trying to figure out what is lost in transition.
