I posted a few days ago regarding mic selection and rough placement for a bluegrass project. The reponse was very much appreciated!

My question de jour:

Is there a way for me to track instruments/vocals on my PC-based system (SONAR 2.0) and then share them with someone else who is using a Roland VS-1824CD?

Could I convert individual tracks to wav files and then load each track into one song on his Roland? For instance, a guitar wav, a mandolin wav, etc?

I'm not even sure this can be done between two totally different machines.

Thoughts/advice?

Thanks in advance,

Earl

If the Roland thing can load .wav files, then it looks like the only pain will be arranging..If it can , record two tracks in Sonar and do a test with the Roland....can the Roland do 24 bit?

Let's see: you can transfer them via SPdif, 2 tracks at the time. You can just play them back, and record them via analog.

What you could do is put each track seperately on CD, and record each track digitally via SPdif to your VS. You'll have to put the VS to external sync for this, and it will start recording when you push play on the cdplayer. So you don't have to worry about syncing afterwards.

I don't think the roland will accept wav files. Maybe the newer version can import CD-tracks from it's drive. Don't know. Maybe my VS1880 can do it too. Hmmm... Where's that manual...

Of course, things would be a lot easier if your friend just sold the Roland thing and got a PC with Sonar. ;)

Thanks for the information folks.

For me to know if the Roland will load wavs, I'll have to read the manual the next time I'm at his house (50 miles away!). My buddy is NOT computer literate at all.....

I know the Roland will at least play wav files as I've made a practice CD for him and it works just fine.

Oh well, the quest continues....

Thanks again,

Earl

With wav files, you mean CD-audio files? (Which are not the same!) (At least, that's what I thought? )

The roland can read audio files, but I don't know if you can import them to your harddisk. I think you can. Bit vague... But you can do the thingy with the spdif for sure if he has a cdplayer with digital out. That will work.

Check the manual, and let me know if you an import the cdaudio... That way I don't have to check it. :D

Roel,

Yes, I meant CD audio files....or at least I think that's what I mean.

I might be grasping at straws on this file sharing deal. I just know his Roland wouldn't be able to load SONAR files. So, I was hoping someone would be able to tell me a way that I could put some type of file on a CD that would load in his machine.

For the most part, the files will be going from my PC to his Roland. Then after he adds his tracks, back to my PC for mxing.

I went ahead and posted the link to this thread on the Roland area of the BBS.

Will report anything I find out about this.

Thanks,

Earl

I think most of your worries should be about getting the tracks from the VS back on your pc! It takes quite alot of time to write down every track seperatly with the VS.

What I'd do here: just make a quick 'n dirty mix in sonar, burn it on CD, import that mix on the VS (if it's just for tracking, he doesn't need all tracks), do the overdubs, put these overdubs on cd, and import them (only the overdubs) in Sonar...

What you could do for synchronization is record some clicks in front of the song. Your friends should record these clicks at the beginning of each track...

Roel,

Thanks for the suggestion. It's the best one so far.

Will let you know how it turns out.

Thanks again,

Earl
