i've finally got around to having the need of putting tracks on cd. but i see that the version i have does'nt have the pertinant options!

in the save as, there's a host of various file types - but there's no mp3 option.

so how do i convert the cooledit ".wav" (they say they are wav but don't act like regular .wav's apparently) into an mp3? do i need to get a separate wav to mp3 converter now?

along these lines, what do i need in order to burn files so that they can be played on any portable cd player (etc)!?

so close yet so far!

thank you

If you're making an audio CD, .wav is much better quality - no data compression.

Like Madaudio said. If it is going to CD keep it as a wav.

You should be able to save to MP3 if needed in CoolEdit. (It is built in)
If you want to save to WMA / FLAC / OGG / Quicktime in cooledit you can download this the filters at this site.

ok, it could be me.

but i tried to put a file onto a cd. it transfers. but it only plays what you choose to open it with. windows media player in this instance. it won't play in a portable cd player (or anything else i guess).

"if you want to save to WMA / FLAC / OGG /..."
what's the extension for a file that plays in a regular ol' cd player and how do i do this (as it does'nt read .wav's)!?

and as i said (and might be me), the files In cooledit end with .wav. but they seem to be different than a purely windows .wav.
if u look in properties it does'nt say it's a .wav. it says "cooledit file"!

also, my version says nothing about mp3's. i see no way to save my files as mp3's (is it somewhere Outside of the save as/drop down file extension list?) .

i'll check that converter out anyway, thanks.

if i recall, the help section mentioned MPEG's but not mp3's!

edit, that cheetah pak has a caveat about compression. is this a default process for all formats? i don't want to lose anymore quality than due to my own lack of talent!

Sounds like it's burning a data CD and not an audio CD.

The Madman here seems to be on to something. :D

It sounds as though you're burning a DATA Disc. Make sure you've selected an audio burn in your burning software prog.

Also, make sure you're saving those wav's as "Windows PCM wav" and you're in 16 bit.

i'll check this soon (can't right now). i'm sure i saved as pcm tho.

so what if i do both? this still isn't going to play on a normal cd player i don't think. or will it?

If you burn an Audio CD it will play on "Normal CD player" and on PC
(Probably on MAC as well)
What burning software do you use?

There is an option for saving mp3 on Cool Edit but you should use WAV files.

well it would be nice but it does'nt. right now i'm using roxio drag to disk. maybe this isn't the thing to use? i do have nero and maybe should try that.

but as i said, it does transfer to the disk. and it opens with either roxio player or window media player.

and no again, i see nothing in cooledit dealing with mp3. it is Not in the list of extensions. but i hear that's not the greatest format anyway.

What version of Cool Edit do you have.

In Audition 1.5 and 2.0 they have a CD layout feature that you can burn an audio CD right from the program.

I think It was in the CEP version as well but I only have Audition 1.5 and 2.0 loaded on my PC.

I don't remember what version they added the feature.

cooledit 1.2a (and roxio 6). would using "drag n drop" be a problem here?

anyone have roxio or nero? maybe you could walk me through the process? it's all fairly easy with a few clicks. but so far it's not working (not playing in a cd player). i've gotta be missing a step or something.

You could just use Windows Media Player...

Just make sure the WAV files are at 16-bit/44100 sample rate.

You can click the "Burn" tab, drag the files into the list, then click "Start Burn"

do you think i'd be posting here if i Could do that?

ok, i opened roxio proper - not the drag n drop. i see where the data as to music option is. i found the finalize option (where it even says using this you'll be able to play it on any device). so it seems i'm on track...
but now, of course, when hitting the burn button i get a box saying that the drag n drop kernel is in use! i closed/exited this but i keep getting this box.

so i'm back to square one again. i even rebooted and took the disk out. nope.

i had a feeling i'd run into this when it came time to actually use it.

Are you on Windows or Mac?

I'm guessing Windows? I'm not sure if Cool Edit runs on Mac...

If you're on Windows why can't you use Windows Media Player?

If you're on Windows why can't you use Windows Media Player?

why else? so i can let folks here stuff when there's no pc around. maybe i can try nero but i suppose i'll get some weird error with this to.
i'll probably have to wait and just give my files (.x!?) to whomever might master them. this is a bit pathetic.

hey, i got it. as i guessed, when trying all the same with nero, i got that damn error saying the recorder was "already in use" - even tho roxio was closed and there was no disc in the drive.

what did i do? i f---ing got rid of roxio, period. seems to be a glitch with their drag n drop (kernel).

so i heard my music on a regular cd player for the first time.

it's probably the cd player as i get this at times with store bought cd's. but is there a way i can ensure there's no skipping? longer burn time i guess. my player skips or clicks every now and then, which is one thing. but 4 some reason it's worse certain days (with the same cd).

what does DAS mean/do (a feature on some cd players)?

lastly, how do folks decide what's the best file format? that is, when i get around to handing my tracks over to a track master tek, what format should they be in?

This is your entire problem. Drag to Disc is a Data storage utility, not an audio burning one. You're creating DATA discs, like Madman and I stated previously.

Burn with Roxio if you want, but don't use drag to disc. Use Nero if you want, but burn an Audio CD through Nere Burning Rom, or Nero Express.

User Error, as usual.

Roxio installs corrupt drivers for Nero. These are two companies that hate each other, and Roxio is playing dirty. Even if you uninstall Roxio, you'll still have their drivers corrupting Nero burns. There is a Roxio uninstaller online somewhere, for free. It wipes out all the drivers and restores the Nero drivers. I'd give you the link, but I don't have it.... Google it.

When presenting your racks to a mastering engineer, they generally don't care if it's in Audio CD or Data CD. As long as it's in wav or aif format, in either 24 bit (preferred data) or 16 bit (audio) it will work fine.
