So I write a song on guitar and I'm going to program some drums on a drum machine, how do I figure out the right BPM? I hate the trial and error method... What I usually end up doing is playing the song while counting the number of beats in 10seconds then multiply that by 6. This works well but not correct all the time. Is there any 'correct' way to do this?

You might as well just find the tempo that feels right on the drum machine.

If you try to time your playing it will be a little different every time you play it.

there is a programme called BeatCalc 2.5 that has a tap function to work out tempos. I know it's around but I couldn't find it - I know it's freeware.

cheers

This probably isnt an answer you'll want to hear, but if I were you I'd go back and program the drums first, then re-record the guitar over them. Even if the guitar was recorded with a metronome its usually easier and less time consuming (in my opinion) to make a new click track and redo the guitar over it and then you dont have to worry about wether the tempo of the drums and guitar match perfectly or not.
