Field Recording

A friend and I want to do some field recordings, but we're not sure what the best equipment for this sort of recording might be. By field recordings, I mean recording ducks at the pond, kids at the park, water at the falls, etc. Of course there are portable DAT recorders, but I priced those in the $1000 range. That's just not in the budget. We're looking for a decent analog method. Obviously, one could take your cheap boom box out, but the mikes on those are just awful. We were thinking of getting a decent tape deck, and taking a good mike, plugging it into the mic. in on the deck, and recording.

Has anyone out there done this sort of "away from home" recording? If so, what did you do to get decent quality? Thanks.

Look into a minidisk recorder...walkman type .They will get you much better results.

Maybe a decent sampler

But you probably want to record long durations. I know you said your on a budget, but man, I use a Tascam DA-P1 For recording band practices with two
Sm-57's. What an awesome recording. I mean we were REAL impressed at the clarity of everything, I mean everything. We had just two mics in the room placed strategically. The Dat's are real clean anyway (atleast this one is) But, I think alot of it is due to the XLR Mic in's. So try to atleast find something with those if ya can. Also, things like you want to record tend to have alot of background noise, being outside. You might want to think about parabolic mics. But that will probably be spendy.
