Does tracking at 24-bit allow you to record at lower levels?

Oops, I missed this one Dobie. All other things being equal (quality of converters, blah blah blah)... yes. The theoretical noise floor for 24-bit audio is significantly lower than 16-bit.

Wow. I actually like this.

Two things do stick out a bit. A little too much compression artifacts like someone else pointed out. Heavy compression isn't a bad thing, I really love what Kate Bush does. But not when it gets too distracting. The level of control you applied to sibilance is pretty nice, though.

Then there's a bit too much room resonance or reflection that is also a bit distracting me. This, along with compression artifacts, is making the track seem a little uneven in some places. Especially in a few spots where chest voice (or whatever they call it) sticks out.

I noticed these things because I am very critical when I track my own vox with similar issues at times. But then again, It's not like I know the answer to them, however.

But boy, I do like what you've pulled off here. When you do retrack, I hope you re-capture the essence that makes this track interesting.

Oh, I know another one... Tori Amos "Me and a gun" from Little Earthquakes... Solo vocal, and dry like Dobro's tune too.

I can't believe she was so open about being raped.. serious tune..

The Alanis track is good too...

interesting listen doobro.. It makes me want to try something like this.. I guess you could say it was inspiring in that respect..

I thought the one line @0:19 could have been better.. Mostly on the word "inside."

Did you do this to a metronome or was it totally freestyle? It sounds like it gets a little faster towards the end..

interesting piece..

your breaths were too loud. I wouldn't eliminate them in your recording, but reduce them by whatever method you prefer (in cep, or whatever...)

different.... didn't hold me on the edge of my seat, but I suppose drinking some kind of tea while listening would work

Freestyle, Sam, yeah - if it speeds up, that's why.

pglewis - thanks for that feedback - that's the most useful stuff I've read about levels - I know exactly how I'm gonna approach tracking stuff now. Good and excellent and fine feedback. Cheers.

mixmkr - well, tea, yeah. Or coffee. Or just get your heart broken. The song'll make more sense then. :)

I wish I knew how to hear the compression going on. I listen to a lot of stuff, so I should be able to spot this. I think I'm gonna have to experiment - record the same vocal a number of times on different tracks, but with increasing amounts of compression so I can compare them.

Thanks for listening and commenting everyone. As usual, it's pleasant when you say you like it, and it's useful when you hear something in it that doesn't work.
