I am looking at buying a controller and/or interface. I would like to keep it under $1000 or perhaps lower. I have seen the 1082 and just have a few questions about it. For the record, I am running a 15inch PowerBook with 1.5ghz, 512 Ram, 10.4 Tiger, Reason, and Logic Express mainly. I saw that the Tascam has "touch sensitive faders." Is that the same as motorized in that they will change based on the song position or something completely different? Also, it seems as though the interface may be a little difficult (as far as buttons having more than one function) Can someone with experience tell me a little bit more and give me an idea of the product. Also, feel free to suggest any other products in this price range that you think would be good. Thanks a lot.

Hey chief hang in there.

The FW-1082 is a mad piece of kit - It's an audio interface/mixer/control surface so yes you can mix your software from the board its self and when you play back the faders will move, lights flash, magical things happen. If digital is your thing then give this a look in.

Touch sensitive means exactly that. They will respond to the slightest movement on the fader and will move in realtime when playing back your tracks from your pc/lappy.

There are very few products out there in terms of virtual controllers/mixers AND interfaces in one. There is really only Digidesign 002 for Protools and the FW-1082 and FW-1884 (1884 as has more mic preamps than the 1082) that I know of.

There are a couple of control surfaces out there by Mackie and Behringer but they dont have any audio interfacing so you can only mix your software with their controllers.

The best thing to do when looking to buy new gear is to read read read! Then go into your local store and check it out. It doesnt matter if you don't know much about recording or mixing, if you make a dick of yourself at the store infront of the sales guy you just don't go back. Plus who cares what he thinks you probably earn more money than him anyway.

The manual for the FW-1082 is here http://www.tascam.com/Products/fw1082.html. Everything you need to know about it is there so take a look.

Remember lots of reading! Otherwise you'll probably be flogging your gear off through ebay in a months time because it didnt do what you expected it to.

Hi, Iam new to this forum, I mainly want to give my point of view.
I bought one of these babies a couple of months ago, along with 5k of studio updates, g5, logic 7, etc, my point is that although I was snowed under with all this new gear, the tascam came out of the box n plugged straight in... so simple, 1 firewire lead! after syncing your software, its a joy to watch and feel your mix`s unfold at your fingertips..(corny?..)
Id rec this as a simply all in one well priced unit, with a great build qaulity...(nice lights too owww... inda smoke filled labs!)
