ferrograph microphone

I have a ferrrograph 631 mono recorder can anyone advise me what type of microphone would be best.

Well to start with I don't think you can use a condenser microphone for the ferro only has 1/4 microphone input so your limited to a dynamic microphone with either a 1/4 cord or an XLR with an adapter.
You could use a condenser only if you have an out side phantom supply or a microphone that can be battery operated.

It depends on your connection type of course. Any type of mic could be used with the right preamp and right connection cable. i.e. AT3035 + SD MM-1 + XLR to TRS cable for a 1/4" TRS connection (i.e. balanced). What did you have in mind in terms of content / results?

Hi Shadow
Sorry but but your suggestion is like a foreign language to me, I have a realistic dynamic with a mono plug attached but when I tried it out I had to turn up the bias that far that it created a buzzing noise and the needle still hardly moved and the end recording was noisy and not easy to hear.

Which is where a microphone preamplifier comes into play. It's like a pre-volume volume knob. Plus it helps shield the mic if there's some form of current wired to that connection to power a specific type of mic. (electret).

In short the output of the mic is a very weak signal. You need to amplify it. And/or use a mic with a stronger signal.
 
Hi shadow I had a preamp that I used for a record turntable I have connected the mic and recorder to it and it works great, you hardly need touch the bias control to send the needle across.
