im pretty new to beat making.
like 4 months into it.

any advice would be great. especially in the mixing department.
the ones at the top of the page are the newest. theres 17 alltogether.
i dont expect anyone to listen to all of them, that would be time consuming.
almost all of them are snippets.

Hmmm....it seems like the beats are missing that fatness in some of the instruments. They're good, but I think they'd hit you harder if they were fatter. You're using reason. Try messing around with the compression and chorus on your instrument channels. Also, I usually eq a lot of the bass out of my main instruments and layer some together to make mine a little fatter.

And I know what you mean about time consuming. I've got about 111 beats on my shit...so trust me on that one.

word thanks man. i laways use compression on my drums, but rarely anything els.
i'll try to institute what you said.
i appreciate that.

.peace.

No doubt. That's kinda funny because I never use compression or eq on my drums, only reverb and maybe a touch of chorus from time to time.

I listened to a few of them and liked what I heard, especially given the fact that you've been doing this for only 4 months. At 4 months for me, you sound like a seasoned veteran. Jigsaw was hot. I'll go back later on tonight and listen to rest of 'em.

I hit the first five or so, and I liked the shit. Yo, do you let cats do promo joints on your beats. We do dope songs man and your beats would get heard by quite a few cats. Check us out PROFOUNDONLINE.COM

Yeah, nice stuff, I like that Jigsaw too..........What you making your drums with? Sounds like an Akai...............
Keep it banging!

thanks man.
i wish i had an Akai, but those are the factory drum sounds that came with Reason.
I layer them though. its usually at least 2 bass kicks and 2 snares. sometimes more.

try some compression, it works great.
your more experianced than me, so you probably know what your doing,
but compression helps a lot.

Threshold: -10db to -15db
Ratio: 6:1 to 8:1
Attack: 3ms
Release: 10ms
Knee: Hard
Gain: +5db to +7db

^ i usually stay somewhere close to there.
except Reasons M class compressors release only goes down to 50ms.

The thing is....the drum samples I use sound great out of the box. I've got about a gig of nothing but drums, hi-hats, claps, percussion, ethnic sounds and all that that I've collected over the years...all of it was free. You have to be careful with premade sounds because each source can be made totally different. As for me, I just go by my ear, if it doesn't sound right there, then I'll work with it until it does. Mostly I use compression on everything else, just not the drums (it might be me, but I think if you compress anything on the redrum you have to compress it all, and I'm not cool with that). You've only been making beats for about 4 months right? From what I can hear, your ear is there, otherwise, the mixes would be horrible (but they're not). It took me about 6 months of messing with beats daily with my mentor before my ear got anywhere near decent.

Now with that being said....compression may work great once I decide to get the triton and fantom racks and record straight through them (just for a new way of doing things). However, I still gave you good rep because that other thread you started about compression was good info.

By the way if all you're using is Reason's drums, I thought those were kind of weak. I just wasn't feeling them, so I looked around and picked up a massive collection. If you've got a DVD rom, hit me up and I can make you a copy of a CD that I have with my full drumkit and a lot of soundfonts for NN-XT that should beef up your arsenal.

i dont know about this dude, but i sure as hell would love some new sounds! ive got about a gig worth of refills too but i always need more.

I'm workin' with about 8 gigs of refills, about another 4 gig of drums and soundfonots all of which I've collected over the years...and it's all demo shit for the most part. Demo isn't necessarily bad though. It usually means I don't get all the fluff, maybe just a little.

word up, yeah i peeped your beats a while back, your drums are deffinetly are on point. i dont have any refills so compression is a must for me. but i agree my drums are kinda weak.

yo, that would be lovely. if you would be willing to do that, id be forever grateful.

Aiight no prob. I've got to make a new CD of that anyway. If I try to load it up in Reason from the CD itself it won't work on the bass drums because I have sooooo many in there. I'm gonna section that out so it will load faster because I used to have it all on my hard drive. That's about 13 gigs almost with refills, drums, and soundfonts. Right now, I'm working on beefing up my arsenal a little bit myself with every dr rex loop I can find. I figure that'd be the easiest way to start sampling if I want. Otherwise, I'd just have to search for different stuff on the net or on CD's and sample them out of Cubase or Acid. In my opinion, I think Acid is better for sampling than Cubase, but that's just my p.o.v.

So anyway, hit me back with your address and when I make that CD (give me a couple of days because tomorrow should be a busy recording day), I'll send it on over.

Fie.

any way i could get a copy of that cd too? i'd offer to trade with you but i only got a little over 1 gig you probably already have everything i do.

Aiight, I've got your addy. If there was a way I could post it all as one big ISO file I'd do it, but it wouldn't work.
