Feedback?

I'm really new to recording and I have a friend with a problem. He does DJ stuff and he's getting feedback when he records. He's using Cakewalk and has no idea where it's coming from. Being new to this myself, I'm not sure what to tell him. I'm sure there are several things that could be causing the problem but what are the more obvious things?

Any help would be appreciated.

If he is recording wiith a mic, he most likely has the monitors up too loud. If he is not using a mic, he has the output of cakewalk going back into his mixer (and therefore back into Cakewalk) creating a loop.
