Feedback please. Les Miserables - On my own.

Hey, I'm 13 and I have a very good voice teacher but I thought it would be good to get some feedback from you guys. This is a video from my latest performance. I love Samantha Barks' version in the 25th anniversary of Les Miz.

Great job - you've got a strong voice and good pitch. That is a tough song to sing - that's why it's Broadway!
 
Thanks ido1957. I love Broadway. I'm trying other songs in Les Miz and they are all a good challenge.

I may not be the one to ask, but I'm not a huge fan of the forced vibrato that you (and granted, many performers I've seen) use. But that's just preference. Other than that it sounds good :)

Also, where are you from? I can't tell if you're American trying to sound British, or British trying to sound American... Sounds interesting. Keep up the good work!
 
I checked it out.

For a thirteen year old, there's a bunch of talent there. You have a great future ahead if you work at it.

Your voice is strong, and unlike humjaba, I like your vibrato.

Every now and then your pitch goes wandering around, for example "found" in "found me" at 1:03. At 2:46 your voice gets away from you and it becomes a bit shouty. Some of the starting words of lines are a little on the low side, and lack clarity and strength. Singing it even just a semitone higher may help.

Like humjaba, I was puzzled by your accent, which seemed to vary a bit during the song. I thought I detected some broader Australian sounds in there. At the start of the song, your voice sounded a bit nasally, but this seemed to disappear later on.

These are all minor complaints, and nothing that will prevent you from achieving a good career as a singer.

About 10 years ago I recorded a 13 year old girl with a voice similar to yours. You may be interested to know that now she's just finished a university degree in Musical Theatre, has an agent, is getting some small roles in the London West End--and earns the rest of her living doing cabaret performances in pubs and clubs. We'll see if she ever hits it big but she's at least made a start.

If I can make one comment about your performance, it's to remember that musical theatre is about acting. Thing about the words you're singing, what they mean and where they come in the show. If you can "feel" the emotion the song is trying to portray, your singing will reflect that.

I'm home schooled and I always perform in front of my family.

My teacher had me sing the whole song one note lower because I barley couldn't hit the highest note in the song. He said we are going to work on my "head voice" next and says I will be able to hit much higher later. From my understanding of this "head voice" thing - I didn't use one during this song and I thought Samantha Barks didn't either during the 25th anniversary of "Les Miz". I'm I right on that?

I love her voice!

I've watched some other performances of 'Les Mis' other than the 25th anniversary and have seen how they act more. I'm working on incorporating more acting.
