Ok so this is a very good start. Production wise it needs a few things to take it to the next level. Real human feeling drums with a groove number 1. If you can't play them or don't know someone that can then farm them out on fiverr or something, It's like 50 bucks for a song like this.. Second the singing style what you are trying to do is hard. That fine line between lazy drawl almost out of tune but not. That style of singing is deceptively hard to make sound good. too many entry notes are out of pitch and like when you sing ..one and oh Kelly. The out of tune vocals are too distracting in a few places and suck you out of the vibe of the song. redo some of the vocals and correct the pitch. Sing them in sections and do as many takes as it takes to get them in pitch try holding and acoustic and play them melody of the notes so it's fresh in your head as you do a take. I'm not saying lose the sardonic drawl feel I'm saying sing it better.

Thanks for the detailed feedback. I planned to redo the vocal after hearing it today.

Yeah, I used Superior Drummer, which is technically a human, but I do have a drummer who I can have play over that park to make it even better. Thanks!

the new drums that aren't as tight might sound worse to you at first but they aren't. Well provided the drummer isn't complete trash :)

The string pad or whatever is mucking up the mix because of the reverb on the other tracks. It makes the individual instruments sound indistinct. I am reverb-intolerant though, so grains of salt etc.

I cut some mud, redid some vocal parts, and then tuned a few. Removing the mud might have made the vocal too loud now? But otherwise, how does it sound now?

Great song! Regarding the mix it feels kinda muddy, I would cut the bass a bit arount 150-200hz somewhere. The song could probably benefit from some DeEssing. Maybe lower the vocals a db or two?

Thanks, Jeff. I cut the bass at 90hz about -9db! I use flats, and I find they give a ton of woof in that area. I'm afraid to cut it more, but I'll check the higher range you mention. Is that the 2nd harmonic? Yeah maybe it also has some woof. Thanks for the feedback!

Nice one! I would second the notion that a few of the vocal lines could be performed a bit better. The one that sticks out to me the most is "Then there were our college days." Sounds as though a few of those notes are riding a bit flat there.

The minor iv chord is a nice touch in those few spots. 😉

Personally, I would like to hear a bit more variation in the arrangement. Everything is kind of in all at once and kind of permaplays from then on. Maybe drop drums out during the interlude? Or maybe take the organ out for the second verse? Etc. Just something to break up the monotony a bit.

Other than that, nice tune! 🙂

First impressions (newer mix):

- Overly limited to everything sounding mushed together - like mashed peas and carrots - and you cannot exactly taste which instrument is what.
- Bass is too loud - by a lot.
- Vocal is too far under the music bed
- Drums are muffled sounding
- All the instruments are playing too heavily in the mid range - which fatigues the ear quickly.
