Feedback on my song..

Welcome to the forum Anon...make sure you check out other recordings from fellow forum members and give advice on their songs too. You may not get much response here being your very first post.

Regardless, I like the song. Vocals are really nice and the harmonies sound good too. The thing holding you back is all that amp noise. Find a way to get that down and also whatever is going on in the room your recording in. I heard a couple noises towards the middle that I am sure were not intentional. All in all , its a great start on a promising song. Re-track that guitar with eliminated noise and re-post.

Thanks, yea I don't really know anything about recording and I don't understand that amp noise. I'm plugged into the computer with a Behringer Guitar Link and I use Guitar Rig 5 and Audacity to record. No idea why that noise is there, it might be the cable from the guitar to the link that's just a bad cable.
 
Check your cables, and make sure your input gain is down.
 
Not sure what input gain is :D

Edit: Just found out that Guitar Rig has a noise reduction unit you can put in your setup :S

Is it for sure coming from the guitar track? Can you mute the vocal and see if its still there?

If its the guitar track, are you using any kind of effects? any compressors? I am not familiar with the gear you said you are using. Is it plugged into a Direct Input box that is USB connected to the computer?

What it SOUNDS like to me is that you have it cranked up because it has a low guitar signal. What happens is in order to "hear" the guitar, you crank the volume but what comes with it is the noise floor. You need to make sure you have a good signal to noise ratio. Start with your guitar and make sure its turned all the way up for now. Hook into the box and make sure its getting a strong signal from the guitar if it has any kind of meters. You want a strong input signal that does not clip. Once in the computer, you should have a decent wave form when recorded. If its too small, adjust your output from your box until it looks good.
 
My setup is very basic, and the software I'm using is Guitar Rig 5 and Audacity..

How are you recording vocals? The performance is really good, you don't have anything to worry about there really. Very dry though, time to start mixing! Get some compression and reverb plugins, maybe a chorus for the guitar, the addiction starts here my friend. . . :guitar:

Thanks alot, I don't really know what any of that is :o You mean plugins for Guitar Rig 5? And what's a guitar chorus? I'm using a pretty standard mic and Audacity to record vocals.
 
I like what you're doing here. The vocals and especially harmony are nice, as is the guitar playing. I think you could develop the song structure to incorporate some changes, like a chorus or bridge to contrast the verse.

It sounds like you've got a noisy preamp, or you've juiced the input gain too much. I'm going to guess the problem is in your Guitar Link interface. If you have a slider on that, try backing off on it. Don't worry if the guitar signal sounds too low as you record it, as long as you are capturing the performance. You can boost the volume on playback.

Yea, I am seriously intimidated by the music I've heard from people here so far, it just sounds so professional. I don't have the equipment or the technical knowledge to do something like that I think..
 
Not a one of us here is a pro, I'd guess. We are all here to learn, share, and improve. Just like you. Don't be intimidated. Even if you haven't yet learned much about the technical aspects of recording and mixing, you're still an expert listener as you have been doing it all your life. A lot of us are not just here to get technical advice. We still want to know things like, "does this sound any good?" "What's not right about my song?" You are as qualified as anybody to give an opinion on that.
 
I thought it was really good for such a sparse recording. Those are the hardest. Your voice is very good, I do think you will need to do some work (mainly practice) but not much more really than just getting more experienced at singing and recording. Your voice is much better than mine and I don't let my voice bother me, you shouldn't either.

I think it is a nice start, build your equipment, slowly and listen to others, read the feedback as well. As you add more instruments, it gets exponentially harder, but not impossible. But it is worth the effort. But record, that is the way to get better.
 
So just a PC microphone with a standard headphone-jack right? I think you might actually be able to improve on that by plugging a cheapie dynamic mic into the guitar rig. You'll need an XLR-to-TRS cable. Guitar center or something should be able to help you get the right thing. I'm not 100% so someone wiser interrupt me but I used to do that before I had a real XLR input and it worked fine. Should be a much better quality sound.

Yeah your guitar rig program should have a bunch of pedals or plugins for you to play with. Audacity may even have some. Try a chorus pedal/plugin for the guitar and maybe some reverb on the voice, I think you'll like the way it sounds. Pedals are half the fun of playing electric haha.
 
Came up with a chorus and I'm gonna re-record the whole thing tomorrow, try to make it sharp and clean :D

I thought the guitar had a nice tone. It was well played too.

I thought the voice also had a nice tone. The harmonies were very pretty.

Some background noise at 1:56-1:57. Like handclaps that were across the room.

But the biggest thing was the hiss. I haven't read this thread all the way through, so I don't know if it's been discussed. But it sounds like your recording chain is pretty noisy.
 
Sounds good through the Avantone. Guitar part reminds me of John Renbourne.
 
Hi!

Really nice track with alot of emotion I think! I acually think it's kind of charming with the noise in the background as it made me feel like you are sitting besides me playing, or very close to it.

Recording wise, I think the guitar sounds really good (besides the noise) solo. When the vocals kicked in I heard some clipping when the harmonies began (you might have a too high input-signal when you are recording).

This song as an edge of emotions and the noise gives some vintage colors to it and an intimate feeling. really nice song :)
