Hi there, I'm a newbie here and I have been experimenting with Reaper for sometime and here is one of my recent cover song that I recorded and mixed. The vocal part is not recorded at my place and I don't know what kind of mic she is using. Any comments, feedbacks, suggestions and critics will be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Thank you guys, will try to increase the vocal more. The vocal track that the singer sent me isn't loud at all, is there any way to kind of bring it up without introducing noise? Will a normalizer or compressor do any good?

Yea, you can add gain with a compressor, or if you don't want it compressed, just use some gain. Is there noise in the source? Adding gain to it digitally won't introduce any noise.

If there is noise on the original vocal recording, then compressing it will increase the overall noise in the mix.

Otherwise, if the vocal recording is clean to start with, you can either add overall gain (ie. boost everything uniformly) or compress and add make-up gain (which will particularly boost the quiet parts).

If the vocal is very quiet, you might need to do some EQ'ing to make it sit well in the mix. Whispered vocals close to the mike tend to be a bit richer in low frequencies, so a low cut could be needed.

Thanks for the replies, the gain on reaper is already maxed out, I guess I have to compress it. I don't think there is noise on the present file so I will try to compress it and see what happens. I actually have no experience in compressing, is there any sort of guideline to how to choose the right ratio, threshold, the milliseconds and other settings to get that extra gain? Thanks for taking your time to help me, a real noob here so I really appreciate your patience :)

You might be confusing the fader with gain. If you cannot bring the level up, then bring all the other levels down and then add it in in the master.

As good as this mix is I am rather surprised of your lack of knowledge. You may want to do some research on the subject, there are many stickeys and threads here that can help you. Using compression isn't complex, but it does require some knowledge.

Thanks for the suggestion DM60, will try doing that. Yeah I think I meant fader.

The instruments are already good enough, I just need to high pass the guitar, boost 100Hz and low pass on the bass guitar, EQ the kick and snare and add a little bit of reverb. But none of them are compressed and I haven't experiment with it yet. This is my 5th song that I recorded and mixed by myself and I think I still have so much things to learn.

Will try to study more about compression, thanks again DM60.

Hey guys, I am doing another cover song again, this time I learned to use a compressor a little bit on some of the tracks as well as for the final mix. I struggled a lot with separating between the bass guitar and the drum kick bass sound. Any comments, suggestions, feedbacks will be greatly appreciated! Thank you
