Feedback on Mixes from Pink Floyd Tribute band?

Hey all,

I've been mixing some tunes recorded by my Pink Floyd tribute band. We went into the studio about a year ago and multi-tracked our entire show in one take (about 32 tunes in one night!), and I was given the multi-tracks. Anyways, I've been working on trying to get a good mix, and am interested in hearing some feedback. Now, obviously these aren't our own songs, as it is a tribute, so I am not sure if I would even be allowed to post (even for the sake of education), but if I can, and people are interested in giving me some feedback, I'd love to post some and hear what people think. Thanks!

Well, everyone learned their parts, that's for sure. Generally, I think it sounds good. Nice balance, nice panning, nothing stepping on anything else, the right effects on everything. The weakest link to me is the drums. He's the only guy that isn't playing everything like the record. Usually, that wouldn't matter to me one bit. But considering everyone is pretty much playing to the tee, it's noticeable when the drummer isn't.

Also, even though drums don't sound bad, I don't hear any overheads. Snare and kik are loud and clear, but I could use more cymbals and hi-hats. Actually, if I were to nit-pick, I'd say the drums are a little bass-y or a little too thick, but that's barely an issue.

Another thing I noticed is there's some weird distortion that happens just as the guitar solo takes over from the sax. Sounds like a weird glitch.

Overall though, very well done.

Out of curiosity, what do you feel the drummer isn't doing like the record? Anything specific?

Like I said, I'm nit-picking. But it's mainly during the second part of the guitar solo, where everything comes down a bit. I think the bass drum should be playing 1,2,3,4....He's playing 1....3....etc...It leaves too much space. Also, on the record, that part has hi-hat playing all the through it as well as the toms. I realize this is almost impossible to do and I'm sure Nick Mason over-dubbed his toms on that part. But it just seems to lack something. I feel like he needs to fill in that space with a little more.

Hey man, it's really good, don't take what I'm saying too seriously. Like I said, I wouldn't have even noticed it if the rest of you didn't have everything down so close to the original.

No worries! Like I said I REALLY appreciate the feedback, and it's great to talk with someone with as much knowledge and appreciation of the music as we have. I was just curious because I am actually the drummer , and I love hearing feedback on how to make things better. Nick's tom (or hi hat) parts were overdubbed for sure on DTSOM.....maybe I'll overdub some hi hat in that section to fill it out a bit. For the kick pattern, I am not sure why, but I gravitated towards what Dave Gilmour played on the "Collection of Great Dance Songs" re-recorded version, but I'll give Nick's quarter-note pattern a go too. Thanks so much!

Couple of questions here
1) Is the drummer playing midi drums?
2) Was that a midi sax?
Good clean recoding and mix. Maybe the singer could maybe put just a little bit of growl in his voice here and there. Good gig-getter demo

Ah, didn't think of that. Maybe that's why I couldn't put my finger on what wasn't quite doing it for me with the drum sound. Not that they sound bad by any means, but there was something. Either way, I'd turn up the overheads, or get more cymbals and hats in there.

The drums are acoustic. Yamaha stage customs....Ludwig steel snare. I wasn't a huge fan of the cymbals, which is probably why the OHs are a little low.

The sax is MIDI, yes.
