I am thinking of stepping up to the 2488...I currently am using the Korg D16 and have been pondering the upgrade. Just want to get some opinions before I spend the cash. Does anyone have any good recordings that I may listen to. Thanks in advance

too much coffee for the 2488

well I bought a 2488, about a year ago or two.
I was a older-non digital lobbyist (especially since my first Roland 840...which sent me running back to ADAT, MiniDisc etc...)
but I tried digi5tal again, with success on the 2488.

I'll say the good points, imo, are menus/user interface being simple & so,so easy these days (probably on most units).
You can nearly record on this within an hour. OOB, out of box.

If your buying new, you'll have the good software. early 2488's seem to have had a glitch, about 3 years ago. but I'm sure you've read this.

Its a great bang for the buck imo.
My comparison:
A Tascam 144 4 track cassette cost $1200 in 1979.
Now you can have a 2488...24track/24bit/ with effects/ CDR/ USB/ optical, drum machine sequencer....geez... $999.
So there's my excitment and pro-2488 stance.

Concerns:
* This is made for home use...its plastic and would'nt handle much abuse I suspect. Handle with care.
* The paint wears off on the plastic. Spray paint on plastic is what it is, they should have just used dyed plastic...frkn black or grey..
* The sliders are shorter than some big boards, this is fixed alittle with the software. But using the channel sliders works (and some pro's say this is standard to do anyway...maybe my lamens skills on fade outs chopping off).
* Some say the screen is small, but ALL these types have a small screen in comparison to a PC with LCD 19" monitor.
* Final burn 2488 has an Compressor/Dynamics and Expander/Dynamics, either or of course....
* I have never used all 24 tracks....but I do love having more than 8!

There are some beautifully crafted music around here that was done entirely on the 2488. So there's the proof in the pudding...Rami, BMWerks....the unit is 24bit digital, etc. I did a four/five piece song in about an hour the other day..bare bones, it was a blast.

but....if your going to get into HR Mastering/EDITING with software, just buy a PC Recording setup, right? why have the transfer shit going on??
Editing/Mastering/Wave files youo'll NEED a 19" color flat panel LCD time.

I'd love to try a PC setup :D , even a cheap SONY Sonic F and Sound Forge + a Sound Card... you get unlimited tracks, some HR mastering stuff, burning multi CD's, cover art, posting to internet or your producer....wow. All in one box....
The only thing is I have't owned a PC system yet and wonder if it gets hang ups........from what I seen, PC systems have advanced greatly too.

hmm...I haven't used those electronic drums for over 8 months now????

Bought mine when they first came out and have had no problems with it at home or in the field. Don't like the small screen though.

I bought mine spring of 2004 to replace an aging 8 track reel. It has worked perfectly since then. I have it rigged for "6 direct outs" since my other (digital or midi) stuff is all sequenced and synched to the 2488. Everything is combined down via a mixer. I work with the 2488 rigged as 3 stereo sub groups and I only record analog sources on it, voice, guitars, and bass. When I'm done I record my final mix to a stereo pair and make digital copies to mini disc and pc.

Mine has worked perfectly since I got it.

Asked a similar question in a thread in the Fostex area, but wondered if anyone could comment on how the 2488 and the Fostex VF160ex stack up against one another? I think I could get a 2488 for 'only' £40-50 more than the Fostex...

Thanks in advance!

Oh yeah, it's definitely a well written ad copy if one was to use it to sell the 2488 but there is always two sides to everything and I hope you don't mind me chiming in ? ;)

I'm a relatively young guy who recently, say until about '99, thought that everything revolved around digital recording and all things analog were to be laughed at and readily dismissed. To make the long story short, I've gone past that and joyfully embrace Analog. Yup, I went from digital to analog (a new one, ain't it ? :D ) and would never go back.

With regards to your reference to the 144 vs the 2488: If I were to choose only one, I'd say that if they were still making a 144 TASCAM and it'd cost $1200, I'd put it on my credit card and never look back. Shocking isn't it ? :D ;)

Please understand that I'm not trying to bash anyone who doesn't conform to my type of thinking. That'd be dumb and it's the furthest thing from my mind. All I'm doing is giving an alternate reality from my own point of view. ;)

Respect. :)

Rock n Roller...check out RAMI's stuff, and there's BROWNSTONE MUSIC 2488.

thats smart sense cjasek...well put.
I think the "enjoyment" and interface that grooves and equipment you don't have to fight with is the best choice ..always. imo. I'm more into songwriting and the last thing I want is stress-confusion with the equipment.
In other words, a persons application/need is a big factor:
songwriter or producer?, engineer or bar band?, mastering- or duplicator...solo musician or band?

I think one thing for this purchase was more tracks as stopping and bouncing killed my groove, and I wasn't wortha shit at mixing etc..

I've had many, many systems...I've never been sentimental of any gear really, as I trade it. the 2488 is good imo, loved the Yammie MD8 too, the 1979 Teac 144 is still working!! never been in the shop! must be a million hours and miles on it!!...that one Tascam 8-track cassette was decent sounding too MK2? the second release.. I been toying with FREE software pc stuff recently...amazing, frkn FREE!! 16 digital tracks with effects and editing on my 21" screen....burn a CDR no transfer time. :)

the money thing is a trip to me, FREE HR STUDIO SOFTWARE.

Just to chip in... Ive used the Tascam 788 and am led to beilive that the 2488 is really just a bigger version.. with more cool stuff to play with! For value for money I've also been told its a fantastic machine... As with anything though, check the specs and if they are what you need then its the thing to get... Ive looked at other makes, Boss, Korg, Fostek etc etc... they all have stuff on them that Id like but some just have stuff Id never use or need. In this day and age most makes are pretty similar in specs anyway unless you get into the big money systems...
If I was trading up (I wish) Id get one..

Zeek
