i know its best to leave mixxin n mastering to the proz . . but im flat out busted ass broke

right now, i am doin my thang in a home recording studio b/c i would rather have my songs "preliminarily finished" by me . . . than just have em all planned out on paper n waiting for some lotto ticket to drop in my lap . . . .

feedback would be greatly appreciated as I try to learn this mixxin n masterin process . . .

Where to begin.

First off, talent isn't the issue.

Second, you're going to need to list the equipment/software you're currently working with.

Next, you're going to have to learn the basics in the world of sound; frequencies, EQ, limiting, compression. For production purposes, the concept of frequencies and EQ'ing is what you need to learn first, as your "highs" and "lows" need to be adjusted, but more than anything, your "lows".
To give you an idea, "highs" would be Hi Hats, cymbals, etc. While "lows" would be bass, bass drums. Too high of low-range frequency levels leaves a distorted or somewhat "crunchy" sound when the bass hits. First, try to adjust volume levels to even it out if possible.

Finally, the vocals could use a lot of work. It sounds like you're standing in the middle of the room holding a mic in your hand. Let me know how your set up. I'm no prefessional(I know these "technical terms" and the basics from teaching myself, reading, and trial and error) but I've been doing this for awhile, I flow, produce and engineer, Dre style.

get a microphone stand....

make a pop-filter outta a wire hanger, a stocking, and a cut out circle froma coffee lid...

whut program u use? If its cool-edit, I could give u a real basic breakdown on how to ''sweeten" up the vocals, mix good adlibs (voiceovers) and stuff...

just keep reading up man....

thanks for vote of conficence . . .

my set up:

actually the beats were done by several different people with completely different set ups and equipment.

but my "recording the vocals" situation is this:

mic = Audio Technica 4040 with pot filter on mic stand

Miking Technique: Mic Next to Wall in "closet" booth (actually this has gotten me the best sounding recorded vocal than any other position, which includes in the middle of the booth, posted up high, posted down low)

Mixer: Mackie 1202 VLZ Pro

SoundCard: MAudio, Delta 66

Software: SonyVegas Audio (for recording the vocals and EQ'n via VARIOUS PLUG INS. . . . TRACK EQ, TRACK COMPRESSION, GRAPHIC EQ are the ones i utilize the most)
CoolEdit (though I have tried to avoid using it, because when I use it -- particularly the "noise reduction" and/or "normalizing" features, the recording becomes too "tingy" and "electric"
