Does anyone know if the FD-8 can be used as a mixer in a computer set up? If so.....how? I plan on getting the M-Audio 10/10 as the interface........how would i hook it to the Fd-8 so that i can use the mixer or should i for get the md 8 and go straight to computer(through the 10/10?)
thanks for the help

Flutemaker,
I've been waiting for someone to answer your question. It looks like nobody knows. I sure don't know only because I've never seen a FD-8. Perhaps you could give me some information on the unit, and I'll try to help.

Fostex MD-8

Lets see the Fostex MD-8 is a digital mulitracker which i purchased new about 5 yeras ago. it is an eight channel mixer and feed s an onboard 5 gig hard drive.......it has a serial port on back for hooking up to external hard drive(ide or serial)........it has a light pipe in and out...........and the mixer is analog............
all the standard in and out in the back.........has two xlr in's and midi in /out and two xlr's out........
so how would i go about using this as the mixer to feed the della 1010 .........if you need more info on the FD-8 let me know.......i have only used it very rarely........recorded one song with it that was out on my last cd.........just do not have the ear for all the highs and low knobs........spent more time fooling with knobs than playing!!!!!!!
but i am back for another try.........hopefully this time it will work out for me.........
thanks

Flutemaker,
Just a few more questions.

Are we talking two different machines? (MD-8 & FD-8)
Unless I'm mistaken, the m-audio unit is a MIDI interface, does your machine have midi-out?
Does your computer have usb?
Would hooking up the serial port not give you the connection you desire?
If you want to use the MD-8 as a mixer, why not just use it to record as well?

Oppps.......I ment Fostex FD-8

What i have is a Fostex FD-8............the reason i want to use the mixer is to viually see what is going on........the small screen on the Fd-8 is difficult to see .......just thought it would be easier on me to use the fostex -fd 8 as a mixer and then use cake walk and the visuals on the computer to get it right.............no this fd-8 whichis five years old now and was on the way out(tech.wise) when i purchased it new)........does not have a usb.........basically it is the father or grand father of the new MR-8.........except it has a built in hard drive and no usb port..............i like using the mixer...........want to hook it to my computer sound board.........now this is a serial port on the back of the FD-8 for hooking up to a second hard drive...........if i put a scsci pci card in my computer than i could hook it right into the second hard drive in my computer...........so i could use the mixer and hopefully be able to use the cakewalk or sound forge programs to help me finish it up.......as you can tell this is really new to me.........
i am sorely tempted to just get a newer USB unit that plugs in and you play...........i hear so many horror stories about these interfaces/ sound boards not working properly on all mother boards...........USB 2 will be a real plus when they come out with it for audio............as good or better than fire wire units........
oh well.........

The FD-8 can work as a mixer front end, but you need to use ADAT optical i/o.

The FD-8 uses a proprietary disk format, so you can't just hook it up to a PC via the SCSI connection.

The best way to use the FD-8 in conjuction with a PC is to track to the FD-8 and either mixdown to the PC, or transfer the tracks to the PC and do the mixing there.

Instead of the Delta 1010, you'd better off with a card that has ADAT i/o such as the Terratec EWS88D or Event EZ8.

FD-8

Hey JR 97......are adat light pipe and optical cable one and the same? .......the fostex fd-8 has an optical in and out and there is an interface unit by ST Audio that has optical in and out on the pci card.........thanks for the info........it helps.........

ADAT and optical SPDIF use an optical cable. The FD-8's optical i/o can be set to either ADAT or SPDIF. ADAT is 8 channels, SPDIF is only 2. The two formats aren't interchangeable although they can both use the same cable.

I have used my fd-8 to my computer through a rme multiface ADAT in. I used it to download all the songs from the fd-8 drive to the computer for editing and archiving. Worked really well.

I assume that it would work the same for real time recording, though I think there is a setting on the fd-8 you need to change.

I plan on using the FD-8 for when I need more tracks above the 3 or so I use now when recording. Since I don't use a dedicated mixer, I don't mind keeping it around. If only it was 24 bit!
