FD-8 XLR's not working?

I am now a two day old newbie with this FD-8 I rescued from my brothers attic. The only problem I have (besides only being able to do two tracks at once) is in getting any kind of input signal from the two XLR inputs on the back. I've tried several different cords and mics, I even ran a line in from the XLR output jack on my Trace Elliot bass rig all to no avail. Yet, I can plug a 1/4" into the front of those channels with no problems. What gives?

Any ideas?

hmmm
if you have eliminated cords and mics...

does the machine have to be set to record to get input level and signal?

are the inputs set to line and not mic? (and corresponding gain)

do you have a manual?

is there a trick to assigning these inputs to a track?

but....if you say that the 1/4" inputs work, then most probably the mic pre's have blown in the input stage. Could be a job for a techie, and may the reason this unit had to be rescued from the attic?

oh.....if you have been using a mic that needs phantom power, it probably wont work.
