What do you like on Snare, and why?

I have yet to find a snare mic that I really like. I've used the 57, the SP B1, and the ECM 8000. I was hoping for a hypercardiod because I hate high-hat leakage.

The Beyer M201 is a hypercardioid mic that works great on snare.

Thanks Harvey. Do they still make the M201? I can't find it at Sweetwater, which is the only internet dealer of Beyer that I know of.

Has anyone used the Audix D1?

A thread on snare mics was just started a day or two ago. You should check it out.

Wow, I can't believe I missed that. Oops!

Sorry everyone.

The two I bounce between are a Sennheiser MD-441 and an AKG C-1000. The 441 has a pretty tight pattern and an almost condensor like sound. The C-1000 is my go to mic for snare and toms (about the ONLY thing I use them for except for the occassional guitar amp). I use the little gizmo that slips over the capsule that makes them hypercardiod so it's a little easier to get the hi hats in the null of the pick up pattern. A lot of folks hate the C-1000 and rightly so. As a small diaphram condensor, the things they should do well like acoustic instruments, it sucks on. But it shines on snare. Go figure.

I use the D1

Well my boss uses either the D1 or a 57, i prefer the D1 myself, but yeah. He also uses the D1 on toms.

The ATM23HE is nice on snare also. Similar to the M201, as both are tight hypercardioid.

M201 are hard to find used for a cheap price. I tripped over a pair of ATM23HE for a cheap price. I'd still like to have an M201.

I really like the AT ATM25, which is usually used for bass or kick purposes, but it gives me a really good, full snare sound.

Also, keep in mind that your overheads have a lot to do with how your snare will turn out in the mix.

I just saw the Beyer m201 on ebay for 173.00 buy it now. I saw elsewhere that they retail for 450. Go Buy It!!

I used to have a C1000s and I didn't like it on anything because it had too much of a top lift and not enough low end. Now that I think of it though, it'd be perfect for close mic'ing snare.

Thanks for your answers everyone.

The current model is called the M201tg. Full Compass sells them for under 200. They usually have them in stock.

I've used an md421 and 57s with good results.

My favorite snare micing setup is a M201 on top, an M201 on bottom, and a AKG 414 on top (with the -10db pad). Sounds amazing.

I rechecked, and it looks like most of the big places have lowered the price, since Digital Village, Turnkey and GAK are now selling them for £70 ($128) .

The highest prices seem to be those at Academy Of Sound, which is asking £80 ($145), and Sound Control; who are charging $85 ($155).

sm57, one above and one aimed at the outside. Works great for rock and harder music.
