"Edmond Fitzgerald"..is pretty good also.
I don't now much of his work but he seems to spin a good story!

Martin L Gore (of Depeche Mode) - some of his lyrics are unbelievable. My fav song for lyrics must be 'The Loves Thieves'... so many good lyrics in that song but I particularly like;
'Sure as Adam is Eve,
Sure as Jonah turned whaler,
They're crooked love thieves
and you are their jailer.'


Trent Reznor (of NIN) ... such emotion, perhaps my favourite of favourites.

Billy Corgan (Of Smashing Pumpkins and Swan)

Meg Lee Chin (of Pigface)...her lyrics can be immensely clever. Check out 'Nutopia' for example.

Whoever the bloke is that writes the Steeley Dan lyrics... they truly are brilliant.

Two words: John Fogerty. He can join my band anytime . If you want riff-based rock and roll--easy to play but sounds so damn good--JoFo is your man. I admire some other selections too. I think Donald Fagan is a genius (I love "Nitefly"). Of course Bob Dylan too. Peace.

Adam Duritz (Counting Crows)- I like his lyrics because they have so much imagery in them. I also like it when he goes into the abstract lyrics. My favorite line:

"Step out the front door like a ghost into the fog
When no one notices the contrast of white on white"

Jackob Dylan (Wallflowers)- I loved the story he told in One Headlight

I love the way their words flow perfectly and at the same time get accross exactly what they mean without making some of the rediculous things they say sound like a strech. BTW defineately a runon sentence.

4. Bernie Taupin (did I spell that right?). So many Great Elton John songs (Someone saved my Life Tonight), but even more so the lyrics on Alice Coopers "From the Inside" album. One of my all time fav alblums...highly under rated. It even had Dave Johnson on guitar (is that his name?) from Eltons band.

I really dig Taupin as well, master lyricist for sure. He's probably my fav.

Davey Johnstone is one of the greatest guitarists of our time. The dude can direct the Elton John band, play with Alice Cooper, then turn around twang it up for George Jones. Wow!

Wow...a lot of great writers have been mentioned. I'm so glad Chuck Berry was brought up. His lyrics were so detailed and intelligent for the time. Gordon Lightfoot definitely wrote some great lyrics--Early Morning Rain is a great one.

Most of my favorites have been mentioned, like Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, Lennon/McCartney, Jackson Browne, etc...but here are a few more:

Robert Cray--great storyteller.
Jimmy Webb--can write any style and forge spectacular lyrics.
James Taylor--did anybody mention him yet?
Bob McDill--country writer...Amanda..Good Ole Boys Like Me...On The Road...Gone Country, etc.

Leonard Cohen
Carole King (Goffen/King)

Don McClean's song "Vincent" is a masterpiece. Gilbert O'Sullivan's "Alone Again Naturally" is a pretty amazing lyric too. There are just too many to mention...
