That's right, Randy Jackson. Was on the tip of my tongue (of course if I wasn't lazy I could have gone downstairs and pulled the CD ;-]). That solo on Rhythms of Hope is awesome.

Top of list covering all aspects of bass(including dropping it on the floor in concert)-Pastorius. Being totally intimidated by Miles and still putting out de boddm- Marcus Miller. Best imitation of Bass when bass player is actually cooked-Ron Wood and K Richard. Change the world w/ the flick of a thumb-Larry Graham (pre-christian). Being great and no one knows- The early guy in 'Tower of Power' (back to Oakland). Being able to fake everyone out of their socks by overdubbing acoustic chord and octave slides and have it rock-S Clark (animal logic)also honorary mention for sheer muscle. The guy from NRBQ for surviving playing w/ K Richards and C Berry live . Bill Wyman for doing what you're supposed to do. Tony Levin for being so snarly and farty and still so well adjusted. probably others too, especially John Entwhistle for every thing, especially having to go back to the music store 4 times to buy new basses to track 'my generation' since they wouldn't sell him the strings without a 37$ Danelectro attached (sheer obstinance) also applies to filling in a rhythm section where drummer has no idea what 'lay back' means.

I second A Cheney's sentiment and since the coffee just kicked in I will propose what I think is the marketing breakthru of the new millenium. It is eco-friendly and will thrill producers everywhere. Market sets of Bass strings with only 2 strings... the big one and the next one over...eh????

Every time one of these polls come up I see Jaco Pastorus brought up. Who in the heck is he? Where is he from and what does he do? I have never heard him. I know this betrays a little ingnorance on my part. Please don't hate me.

Jaco Pastorious played with Weather Report, a Jazz
Fusion group who had the hit "Birdland".
He made some great solo albums too.

He was a real wild guy, and he was beaten to death in a
bar in Florida, I think. David
