Who is your favorite band level composer? Mine is David Holsinger.

Jimmy Page - arguably not a technically brilliant guitarist, but a wonderful guitar 'orchestrator' and what a prolific and varied palette - full on from 1969 to 1980.

John Lennon

Sting

Steve Howe (with and without Yes)

Peter Gabriel

Too many others to name....

What specifically is a composer?

It's never just one. Well, very rarely. The magical albums for me were a mesh of many different people, who were all sensitive enough to add to it without drowning it.

You have to click on Discography and then Singles. Just the Nowhere Radio way of doing it. There's only two there at the mo' and you've listened to one of 'em. Will have a couple more (and new versions of the ones already there) to go up in a couple of days.

Lennon & McCartney
Brian Wilson
Jagger/Richards
Ray Davies
Pete Townshend
Pete Townshend
Holland/Dozier/Holland
Goffin & King
Leiber/Stoller

Radiohead --- the 'outlier'

(notice how most of the good bands are clustered around the 60s & 70s?)

For writing for the people they played with?

Duke Ellington and Brian Wilson.

How 'bout Bob Dylan, or Syd Barrett? Harry Chapin or Jim Croce?

*edit: Oops...Dylan, Chapin & Croce weren't band level composers, were they?

Matt

Holsinger, eh.... Well, I did like the Helm Tocotta. We had a nickname for it. It involved an off-by-one error on the last letter....

I'm going to have to say Leonard Bernstein. Well, with appropriate transcription.... One of the more well-rounded composers out there as far as a symphonic style goes. That or Jerry Goldsmith, for the same reason. I haven't seen anybody in the concert band genre that has the same breadth in terms of the styles that they create as either of those two. Elmer Bernstein comes in a close third.

oohhhhhhh! geez ... well then you can disregard a lot of these posts I guess. And you can disregard this one too, because I wasn't in high school band and don't really know many of those composers. But are you talking about "classical" composers in general, or composers who specifically write with a high school band in mind? Is there even such a thing?

Band level????

Robbie Robertson
Richard Manual
Rick Danko
These guys were in "The Band"

sorry Levon
...peace
