you're right, but you'll have to admit that some guitars just ain't fast. I mean, take a Fender Strat. The only reasonably fast metal bands I know that play strats are : Maiden, Obituary and Forbidden. And the Maiden's strats are customized.
Sure Yngwie has a strat, but I think he, like DiMeola, can play fast on anything too.
And I have NEVER seen a fast dude on a ES335, or a Gretsch White Falcon, when covering rock/metal-styles.

Have you ever seen Eric Johnson? Umm...he plays strats and an ES335

To some extent there are fast necks and slow necks. Most of your I-Been-Had's and Jacksons are all Fender-style necks - thin and tight - makes it easier to move around. Very few speedsters on Les Pauls - 'cause the neck is thick and unruly - although Randy Rhodes had no trouble with it

Re: Yngwie - I've never seen him play on anything but that scalloped-fret Strat of his, so I'm not convinced that he can play as fast on an acoustic...

I agree. I doubt Yngwie could play that fast on anything but that scalloped strat. I saw him live...it was extremely boring.

That's what I figured - after conditioning himself to the scallop-fret, he's accustomed to an extremely light touch - so he'd be SLOP CITY on an acoustic....

The fastest guitar I've ever played was a Gibson SG with VERY flat frets. Almost like a fretless. Next is my 83 model Krammer Barretta II, it smokes.

Uh, did you forget about Eric Johnson's violin-demon-like scale runs on his GIBSON ES335!?
Pesonally, the fastest guitar I've played had to be my friends Jackson Soloist with ebony fretboard and neck through body. Geez, I thought I was Yngwie on Crank! That neck was so slick, I did a 500 note minor ascending scale in 3 seconds! No thats fast for me, kinda scary!
Action was too low though for making articulate jazz cords. I like my medium action on my 57' Strat to tell the truth. I like to "feel" the strings.

Get the new JEM7V, in the blue sparkle....Yeah Baby...fast, beautiful and your can hammer the daylights out of it and it stays in tunes, plus it gets some nice strat tones...Only $1799.95..Id get one...but... I have an RG350DXWH, lacks in the sustain arena, Im thinking about putting one of the spare SD Jeff beck modles in it! To sum it up...its speed that makes the guitar fast, Its not the guitar that makes YOU fast...

Neck shape, fingerboard, frets and finish can enhance the speed of your playing, but I personally think the propensity of speedy metal guitarists to play Jackson type guitars (especially in the 80's) is because of the SOUND - or should I say lack of sound.

Maple neck-through-the-body guitars are more neutral sounding than many others. I think this lends itself better to thick metal distortion. You'd also see a lot of those players using active pickups, which also tend to be more neutral.

I think this is kind of a funny topic though guys. I mean Malmsteen, Vai, Van Halen, etc. That style is soooooooo old. I just went to the Jackson sight and the intro music is hilarious! It's sounds like they're stuck in their glory days of the late 80's.

Jeez, I almost forgot about Kreator. When I get home I'm putting on Extreme Aggression, that album rocked my world for years. Nobody can screech like Mille. Also, don't forget Coroner.

oops, almost forgot the point of this post.
Ibanez S-Series. The one I have is mid 90's, with the natural mahogany finish and a maple neck/fretboard with abalone ovals. That neck is like butter, if I pick up this guitar after playing my strat or les paul, I instantly gain 10% in speed. I've been looking for another one because I've seen very few like this, and it's got the greatest pickups I've ever heard on an Ibanez. I forget what they're called, I'm at work...

I've seen Eric Johnson blow the doors off the house with a ES335. But then again, EJ would rip on a ukelele...

Actually, you wouldn't want to hear it, because you're right. I do suck nowadays. Pretty much gave it up about 5 years ago.

Besides, I was always a much better guitar builder than I was a player anyways.

OK everyone!! What is the mother of all guitars when it comes to speed? And how much does it cost?

A really nice guitar is the ibaneze js 100, it has good fret action, wide fret spacing and is meant to be played very fast this would probably be about $500- $1000 depending
