Speed? That's me...

Well, just check out the guitarbrands that really fast players play on:

Malmsteen-Strat (scalloped)
Petrucci-(Ibanez)/Musicman
Gambale-(Ibanez)/Yamaha
Vai-Ibanez
Satriani-Ibanez
Darrell-(Dean)/Washburn
Bettencourt-Washburn
DiMeola-LesPaul
Van Halen-Kramer/Fender (yes!)/Peavey(Wolfgang Special/etc.
Friedman-Jackson
Mustaine-Jackson
Schaeffer (Iced Earth)-LesPaul/B.C. Rich
King (Slayer)-ESP/Jackson/B.C. Rich

Me-Ibanez/Jackson (custom GrassRoots)

you do the math. I see a lot of Ibanez/Jackson in that list. ;)

Alex scholnick(testament)Ibanez-charvel
Petrucci plays 6&7 music mans now.
Scalloped necks i heard are harder to play.
Ibanez makes a neck thru, 2 bucker, ax now for $600!!

Since the first album, Eddie's been on strats, Kramers, and Jacksons. I know a couple years ago he was playing an Ernie Ball but I thought currently he was on a Peavy Wolfgang. Maybe I've got it backwards.

The guy who so accurately reproduces "Eddie licks" on instructional videos is Curt Mitchell. He's also faster than snot on greased rails and bounces between strats and Charvels.

I just bought a DK2. It sits and looks at me as if to say, "Yo slow-poke, you got arthritis or what?" :D

DiMeola plays fast on anything, including nylons.

The guitar does not make the speed.

Originally posted by detuned6 Scalloped necks i heard are harder to play.

Yes they are, because they take a delicate touch. I can't play a scalloped fret, because my fretting motion is too heavy (many years of playing high-action guitars) and I end up bending notes.

The reason a scalloped neck is faster is because of this ultra-delicate touch - very little pressure necessary = quicker touch.

Grif

you're right, but you'll have to admit that some guitars just ain't fast. I mean, take a Fender Strat. The only reasonably fast metal bands I know that play strats are : Maiden, Obituary and Forbidden. And the Maiden's strats are customized.
Sure Yngwie has a strat, but I think he, like DiMeola, can play fast on anything too.
And I have NEVER seen a fast dude on a ES335, or a Gretsch White Falcon, when covering rock/metal-styles.

holy shit!

Speedemon you like forbidden! I think we like the same old school thrash bands. testament, overkill, slayer, flotsam & jetsam are some of my favs.

You guys are not the only ones into old school thrash - I am into Overkill, Annihilator, Nevermore, Slayer, Meta Church, King Diamond, Primal Feast, Judas Priest etc.

Hail real metal! :D

To some extent there are fast necks and slow necks. Most of your I-Been-Had's and Jacksons are all Fender-style necks - thin and tight - makes it easier to move around. Very few speedsters on Les Pauls - 'cause the neck is thick and unruly - although Randy Rhodes had no trouble with it :-)

Re: Yngwie - I've never seen him play on anything but that scalloped-fret Strat of his, so I'm not convinced that he can play as fast on an acoustic...

Well, no one's mention Paul Gilbert yet - Ibanez I think.
I very rarely like fast guitar just for fast guitar's sake. It's very impressive, but not always the best musical choice, IMO.

But I have to say this: a good guitarist can play fast on whatever he's given. Obviously a guitar can be set-up/ constructed to facilitate faster playing, but not enough to make a novice play like Yngwie. Eric Johnson can play really fast on his Gibson 335. Vinnie Moore plays an incredibly fast nylon string lick on his first album - was it "Mind's Eye"? DiMeola can also rip on a nylon string (very high action). Listen to "Mediteranean Sundance" sometime. Holy crap. If he can play that fast on a nylon string, he could certainly play that fast on any Gretsch or other hollowbody.

Given that, I would say it's far more a tonal choice than anything else. Hollowbodies don't respond tonally like solidbodies do. They take a little longer to bloom once the note is struck, and a little longer to die, thus not the best choice for fast playing.

I always smile when I hear kids say "I could play so much better if only the action were lower, and the frets bigger, and the strings lighter, and the pick heavier, and this and that...".
For me, I always play better when my tone is good. If my action is a little high or the neck is tweaked, I can always overcome that when I'm digging what's coming out of the cone.

If there is a propenderance of fast players on one or two brands (i.e. Jackson and Ibanez), I would say it's because those brands have marketed themselves strongly to those types of players, not because those guitars are inherently faster.

Im recanting my previous posting.....

I misunderstood the question... The fastest guitar is the flying V. Its been seen doing over Mach 2 in some cases. Its terminal velocity is usually higher than Basswood and Alder Models. If you put one of those JATO boosters on, it will probably hold some sort of record. Sorry for the misunderstanding....

Peace,
Dennis

P.S. Aaron...I mentioned the PGM====paul gilbert model Ibanez..doesn't anyone ever read my posts?

Then you've got to check out "Hot on Your Heels" off the Steeler album. Whoo! Acoustic shred.

If shred is your penchant I would investigate either a Yngwie scalloped neck endorsee special or a Micheal Angelo custom. Micheal is one of the fastest and what ever he is playing should be pretty good.

Yeah. Check 'em out at www.angelo.com

Goin to see C4 for my b-day in April. Man it's great to see him play live.

Fuck all of these current so called guitarists!!!
GARY MOORE-GIBSON LES PAUL!!!
RANDY RHOADS-JACKSON!!!
those are the only 2 names you need to know

I find that If you play a good les paul slow it sings to you. But it can be played fast if need be.

Yeah Speed. However, also keep in mind another reason metal bands choose guitars other than Strat is often for tone. A mahogany body, humbucking pickups, and a shorter scale length gives a much heavier tone than the alder bodied, single coiled, long scale length Strats.

Even Dave Murray's Strat was equipped with a humbucker for a fuller tone.

Eh. I find my Strat to have a different feel, but to be just as fast as my ESPs or my Ibanez RG550 (be it for different reasons).

THanks for the posts everyone. I like my IBANEZ RG320. It's pretty fast and got a speedy neck! I am thinking of an upgrade with another Ibanez. Any suggestions?
Thanks:D

Dude

we just give you this whole thread full of suggestions...

but here's another little cheap ($419) secret: Cort Viva Gold II.

Built like an Ibanez S-serie guitar, mightymite pick-ups (HSH), lo pro edge-like tremolo, 24 frets, supershred fast neck....
This guitar made my $1000 Ibanez feel sorry... ;)
