Faster Processor & More Ram = Less speed?

I don't get it.
I've been running Cubase VST for a couple of years on a 233mhz processor, 128mb RAM machine and it's been working great.

I upgraded a few months ago to 320mg of RAM and noticed that the CPU indicator would light up more often.

This week I upgraded to a 466mhz, G4 Processor and 768MB of RAM and now Cubase barely runs at all without the CPU indicator lighting up.

Isn't upgrading the RAM and processor speed supposed to make programs run better and faster?

Did you change operating systems? That first computer had to be running win95/98, It really should be going faster, but there are tweaks that need to be done. Also certain chipsets are not compatable.

Did you set the motherboard clock jumpers to do the multiplication to get the processor working the way you expect it to?

Is it a processor that's tested and cleared by the mobo manufacturer to work (correctly) in that motherboard?

One possible quick acceleration is to go into Bios and change the memory bank interleave to 4. Even if that doesn't do the trick, leave it at 4 anyway. There are actually a few things in the mem part of BIOS to look at and possibly change.

Did you get a processor that was still retail/unused or a used one?

Are you sure you got the right ram for that motherboard?

Those are my first guesses for what to look at.
