Fast track noise

I have an M-Audio Fast Track USB audio interface (Say that five times fast)! Right now I'm using a dynamic microphone (Audio-technica cardioid dynamic mic), and the noise is... quite present at times. . I can't figure out if it's the fast track that's causing the noise, or if it's the dynamic mic (because soon I'll be purchasing a condenser mic)

Generally, does the dynamic mic produce more noise than a condenser mic? Or is the fast track a horrible "noisy" interface for a serious home recording studio...

Dynamic mics generally have lower output than condenser mics have, so you have to compensate by turning up the preamp gain. If the preamp is noisy, that means you hear more noise. That could be what's going on.

Or it could simply be that your room is noisy, and you need to work the mic closer to increase the signal-to-noise ratio.

More details about the characteristics of the noise would be helpful. Can you describe it, or better yet, provide an audio clip of the noise?
