fast track interface level help

hey all so now i have my room set up pretty good with foam and cartons around and sounds pretty dead, im using a shure 58 and i have fast track guitar/mic interface just my heaphones and mic are plugged in, i seem to be geting a kind of distortion buzzing sound after i listen to my recording, i dont know what levels my mic input,mix and output i should have while recording in real time. also i am using garageband. hope its not to stupid of a question. thanks everyone :)
 
Ok first, I hope you dont literally mean cartons like cup holder cartons. If you do, just take them down. They will do just about nothing for acoustics.

As far as the interface is concerned, it sounds like you are recording to hot. Gain staging is something that you should do some research on. Google it and im sure you will come up whole a load of results. Just understand that your not trying to get the loudest volume possible at this point. Im sure others will provide some good links.

Easiest thing I can tell you is turn down the mic while recording.

Buzzing may also come from other things like bad plugs, bad cables, etc. I would suggest getting another cable and see if your having the same problem.

Does the buzzing come in on music played through the interface? Like if your playing a cd through your PC? Are the cables balanced or unbalanced? You need to work backwards to find the problem.
